We didn’t make it down to Maritime Fest this weekend, but it seems like a lot of you did. The photos are coming in and what do I see? Beautiful wooden canoes. Lots of them. Ahh… my heart. They’re so amazing. A few days ago the News Tribune even had a cover photo and story about locally produced wood canoes.
The photo is my canoe. Here’s my question. Are there any local folks that restore boats like this? Mine has a fiberglass overlay on it, but could use some love on the top to restore some of the exposed wood. Anybody?

Do it yourself! All you need is an orbital sander, dust masks, some glass fabric and resin. My dad built a bunch of canoes just like that one with the tools listed plus wood glue and a staple gun to hold the slats together on the forms.
Seriously. It’s cake. And you’ll be so proud…

One of my neighbors is working on restoration of a wooded canoe if you need any advise about particular bits.

My parents know a really good boatmaker out in Grapeview. Not sure if you’d want to go that far, I’m certain there’s someone closer…
