Hustler Hollywood Not Pleasing Neighbors (29. September 2006, 19:58 by Derek Young) ~ Hmmm...

So it would appear that Hustler Hollywood’s freeway frontage and glass windows are getting a bit too much attention. Unlike it’s quiet peer across the freeway, the Castle Superstore, Hustler Hollywood has attracted the ire of the neigbhorhood. The question being raised is how much of the store is ‘adult’ versus regular retail. If it’s less than 50%, then the existing permit is fine and the location is legal. If it’s more than 50%, Hustler Hollywood would be forced to move or close. Of course, what counts as ‘adult’ seems to be challenging some folks.

From this morning’s New Takhoman:

Add Council Woman Connie Ladenburg to the mix with, “I’m not at all pleased with this. What is this going to mean for our community? Adult use is not a use that I want in our neighborhoods. I’m very frustrated.”

Here we though Connie was a Democrat and not a Right Christian wing nut.

Exit133 field trip time? Do we need to do a little recon?

Thats close to my neighborhood.
It’s not like it’s a hard core porn shop like elmos books down south, or castle accross the freeway…
I think the name ‘hustler’ has bad vibes with it though.
Do I wish it were something different? yeah, but it is clean and new and the building looks nice and it’s a lot better than the empty lot that was there before.
maybe once they finish the lowes accross the street, it will be eclipsed.

That area kind of is the Grit of Gritty in Tacoma.

hard core or soft core porn….they need to realize that families with kids live near by. They need to cover up their windows! It’s like Victoria’s Secrets now…that place is getting horrible with it’s manequins….I have two small children and I don’t want to have to close their eyes each time I’m walking by or driving by.

people are still affraid of sex in this country. this is great. when i lived in federal way, there was a lovers package in their ‘downtown core’. most of the poeple i saw entering and exiting were college aged. although the business may be unpleasent, i dont think it will attract a negative consumer market. the mecca on the other hand right next to the winthrop is another story! just let them put the female underwears in their displays. victorias secret gets to! i even saw some in front of lane bryant!

“Here we though Connie was a Democrat and not a Right Christian wing nut.”

It seems like almost everyone in the United States with children becomes puritanical when the subject of sex comes up. People think that stores like Hustler Hollywood are going to cause their 5 year-olds to emulate Ron Jeremy. The United States is a country of contradictions. In most industrialized nations, both male and female body parts are regularly displayed and discussed in public and on popular television shows. The religious right wing promotes laws and ordinances limiting our access with the mantra of “protecting the children,” yet the United States has the highest teenage pregnancy rate out of all 24 developed countries.

It seems that by restricting access to sex, American children have more desire to engage in it.

To all paranoic parents: leave Hustler Hollywood alone. Blame the religious right instead.

Sheesh, worrying about what effect VS’s window diplay will have on my 2 & 5 yr old kids is one of the least things I think I should worry about (IMHO). It’ll confuse them more if I close their eyes when we pass, and I think it sends a more damaging, and more lasting message. Won’t change anyone’s minds, and this is probably not the place to debate this one… but for what it’s worth, I’m with drizel (and the rest of the world) on this one.
Sounds good, Derek. Next Thursday, gang? Before Doyle’s? :-)

i live in the area. personally, i have a bigger problem with corner mini marts selling malt liquor and lotto tickets. or gun shops selling semi automatic assault rifles.

i submit that people spending too much money on hokey sex paraphernalia at a chain retail store is not the neighborhood’s biggest problem.

i also would assert that the terrible strip mall development in the area is not a “family” neighborhood—it is retail trash, like so much of the development in and around the mall area.

one other thing: i’ll not have a problem explaining this to my daughter when it comes up (hopefully a few years down the road). i hope to raise her with more profound hangups than that.
