Tacoma Cracker Building For Sale on Broadway ( 3. October 2006, 14:23 by Derek Young) ~ Another Exit133 Headquarters?

The circa 1890 Tacoma Cracker Co. / Durboraw Building at 938 Broadway has come on the market. 9000 square feet. $3.4 million. Freshly updated. The seismic retrofit is complete. The top floor is built out loft style from what we hear. It’s located next to Leroy’s Jewelers on a block that has seem some pretty amazing remodeling in the last few years – including the Pantages lobby.

The Ford building was less money and a lot more space, but a fixer. Hmmm… Who wants it?

Update: More details on the space in the Seattle Times

This block sure has changed in the past year. Some of the store fronts are looking like they are ready for the big name retail to come in. Banana Republic, I am waiting!

Anyone know exactly what was in that building before it hit the market? At least until recently, and maybe still, it had a bunch of sounding boards from grand pianos inside…I found this fascinating but never tracked it down.

Most recently. I don’t know. The building was owned by the Monte Carlo Casino from 1998 to 2000. That upset the neighbors and made the news. I don’t recall if that venture ever opened. From 2000 to now… anybody?

Mmmm…here we go. The current owner of record runs a piano repair business.

Looks like a sweet little building… but at a premium: $378 per foot!

The current owner paid $550k in 2000 for the building. That’ll be a nice profit if he gets anywhere near that amount, even with his renovation costs.

Basically the first two floors of the building are warehouse space for all of his pianos and parts. Full of interesting pianos. Up the stairs to the “Penthouse” on the third floor is like ascending in to a huge New York loft! Like 20 foot ceilings, all one big room, great kitchen space and many different functional spaces all in this huge brick walled (painted Khaki creme color)warehouse level. The best part about the the “Penthouse,” in my opinion, is the unbelievably HUGE (no kidding it’s like 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide) bathroom door! That’s right…the bathroom door is tremendous. Great bathroom behind it too but, Wow…the door! It’s an amazing place. Sophisticated, totally urban yet chic and classy.
