Once upon a time somebody told me that in order for there to be a top 50% there has to be a bottom 50%. Without the bottom there is no top… So we serve a purpose! Which brings us to the Most Dangerous Cities Survey compiled by the Morgan Quitno Press. The good news is that of the cities in the survey, there are 47 cities more dangerous than Tacoma. On the other hand, there are 323 cities less dangerous. It is interesting that Detroit and St. Louis, the two world series teams are at the bottom of the list. What does this say about the connection between sports and crime? Or maybe it simply means we have more in common with a world championship city than we do with Bellevue…
On a similar topic, Pierce County recently launched its Neighborhood Crime website a few weeks ago (via Tacomaness). Ahh… murder is way down in my area, but kidnapping is up. Curious.
I’m still an optimist.

The TNT did a great series on the issue interviewing Pierce County Prosecutor Gerry Horne entitled Dumping Ground:
Pierce County is a dumping ground for the state prison system, which for years has been sending Tacoma and its neighboring communities more than their share of ex-convicts.
Pierce County is not alone, nor is it the worst dumping ground. Spokane gets far more than its share of ex-convicts and inmates nearing release.
State officials promise to ease Pierce County’s problem, but because the situation has evolved over decades, the remedy will take years.
The steady flow of inmates into Pierce County accounts, at least in part, for the county’s high crime rate, puts a burden on neighborhoods where offenders are likely to resume their lives of crime and makes county taxpayers bear the cost of policing and prosecuting them.
Hopefully, our elected county, city and state officials will work very hard in the near future with Horne to address this problem.
I used the crime website and used my mother’s home on the Eastside and her investement condo in North Slope. The crime was almost DOUBLE in the North Slope. OUCH!

Tell me about it! I live in “Near North Slope” where the stolen car count for the year to date for a half mile raius is 98… and that’s down from last year!

Luxury, luxury. At least 98 is in the double-digits. This site seems to focus on downtown areas, but since you mention it, I have a house further south, east of the freeway, in the South Side addition. Motor vehicle theft within .5 mi. is 108, up from last year. I know someone who just purchased a house in a quiet neighbothood across the freeway – 102 thefts there, but at least that was down. I’m calling all the time about abandoned and suspicious autos (not to mention the drug dealing activity) and respponse, if any, is always too little too late. I wish they could crack down on the vehicle thefts. Like using those decoy cars you see on T.V. Oh well, don’t get me started on crime and what isn’t being (or maybe can’t be) done. For even more worrying, plug in your address to Pierce County’s registered sex offender search and see how many of those are within .5 mi.

I just wish it had a per-capita number to put some of these in perspective for those who live in higher density areas.

I have complained to my city council member Jake Fey, that the lights on I st. need to be replaced. It is ridiculous that they have been out for 6 months.
Two weeks ago my car was broken into and the stero was stolen. Last week my neighbors was too right in front of our houses on dark I st. It is simple oversights and precautionary measurses like working street lights that are the first step to stopming out crime.
Fey wrote me back about a week ago saying he would look into it, but no reponse yet.
