Horatio Theater Finds A Home on Opera Alley ( 6. November 2006, 20:48 by Derek Young) ~ Big News For Theater Fans

New fringe theater opens in downtown Tacoma!

TACOMA—Opera Alley is the home to Tacoma’s newest arts venue, The Horatio Theater. “We are looking for an audience that is open, eager, discerning, and intellectually curious,” said producer and owner Erik Hanberg. “I want to bring relevant and exciting theater to Tacoma that pushes boundaries.”

Hanberg is the former Managing Director of the Grand Cinema, Tacoma’s art-house movie theater. “There’s a definite connection between the kind of movies the Grand shows and the kind of plays I want to stage at the Horatio,” he said.

The Horatio will stage plays not usually mounted in Tacoma or Pierce County. The Horatio is the first new theater in Tacoma’s historic Theater District since Tacoma Actors Guild moved into the Theatre on the Square in 1993. The theater takes its name from Hamlet’s closest friend, Horatio, who is charged with the task of re-telling Hamlet’s story.

The Horatio began its lease of 708 Opera Alley November 1; Hanberg hopes to have the space operational as a theater by February 2007. In order to get the theater up and running, the Horatio is seeking 300 founding members. For a one-time contribution, members will receive lifetime benefits at the Horatio including free and discounted tickets (depending on the membership level).

Congratulations Erik

Nice work Erik. The space you have is just perfect, in the Theater District, right in Opera Alley across from Over the Moon Cafe.

I see the first show is on December 14th (A Christmas Show?).

It’s A Wonderful Life, a live 1940’s radio play Directed by James Venturini

Thursday, December 14, 7:00 pm Saturday & Sunday, December 16 – 17, 1:00 pm

The classic movie like you’ve never seen it before! This one-hour adaptation was first performed on the radio with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in 1947. Bring someone special or the whole family for a Christmas favorite, with a whole new spin.

Interesting. I assume the first show will be at the Blue Mouse Theater in Proctor.

This seems like a perfect location. Opera Alley is an anomaly itself. It’s a splash of color and charm amid a rather drab neighborhood, at least at the moment. I’ve never seen more than a few people in Over the Moon Cafe at once, but hopefully the Horatio theatre crowds will enliven the Alley, encouraging others to fix up derelict buildings nearby.

Way to go, Erik. Tacoma needs a lot more people like you.
