Dave's Meat and Produce Opens Its Doors (11. November 2006, 14:04 by Derek Young) ~ Very Exciting

Dave’s Meat and Produce opened its doors this morning at 1312 North I Street. We wandered over to see what all the fuss was about and left with several bags of fresh vegetables and organic fruit. The staff was helpful and everywhere. The vegetables and fruit looked marvelous. The meat counter was very impressive with more options than I knew what to do with. The spices behind the counter were very tempting and unexpected. The staff is still learning, but it’ll all come together. I’m hungry now. Time for dinner?

Dave’s is going to be a great addition to the neighborhood.

What’d you buy?

Ooo… I’ll have to head over there.

Great! I have been driving by on a daily basis and wondering when it was going to open up for business.

I will be dropping in for certain!

We bought some beef short ribs and veggies to braise for dinner. Great selection, though I would love to see some grass-fed beef and pork in the mix.

We had that exact same conversation last night – which morphed into a discussion of the corn industry. Reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma has made it very difficult to go into a grocery story or market without seeing corn everywhere.

I read Omnivore’s Dilemma as well, so of course it has me searching for grass-fed options when there are some to be found.
Trader Joe’s has a few selections of grass-fed beef and there is a farm on Lopez Island that raises grass-fed beef and pork. The owner of the farm makes deliveries to Tacoma for those who are interested, and his prices are very reasonable.
However, I think if places like Dave’s continue to encounter a demand for grass-fed or “real” free-range items, they will eventually have to stock them.

Did anything ever come of the food co-op conversation a few months back?

That’s my bad that nothing has happened. If people are genuinely interested in making this happen, I guess a meeting of some sort should be planned…

I had heard that the woman who ran the store on 6th Ave which is now occupied by Asado’s bar had a co-op going…

Re: grass-fed meat

The Meat Shop (www.meatshopoftacoma.com) has an excellent selection of organic grass-fed meats. It’s only about 10 miles south of downtown.

Historically we’ve gone there 2 or 3 times a year.

Wow! I hadn’t heard of that one! Unfortunately, from where we live by Wright Park, Yahoo Maps says it is 23 miles away and will take 45 minutes round trip!

Just stopped by at lunch. The produce is lovely, but rather ordinary in selection. The meat counter is great! Now, if only they had some gourmet type chocolates…......... And I want the jars that hold the spices!

Those spice jars come from IKEA. My favorite thing about Dave’s so far is that the organic apples are reasonably priced, unlike at Stadium Thriftway.

I had been visiting the market that was put in Freighthouse Square last spring. Since I’ve been without a kitchen for a while due to remodel, I haven’t been buying in bulk for cooking. I forget the name of the place, but it’s at the west entrance and it always had a great selection and good prices.

Given the interest here, it looks like people would like a food co-op in downtown Tacoma. Bellingham has a great one.

Finally got by Dave’s today. Didn’t have much time, but was hoping they had some quick lunch food – salad, sandwich, etc. Alas, no luck.

They said that they are looking for suggestions & if enough people ask… (For anyone who is looking for another quick pick-up sandwich place – consider this a hint.)
