If Exit133 were to put together the online gift guide for 2006, what should be on it? As we enter this period of gratuitous consumer spending, online ordering, and present wrapping, it would be nice to send a little love to the local manufacturers, retailers, artists, and small businesses that have invested in our community. What should be on the list? The more specific the better…

SMOFU!The Pacific Northwest’s AbFab smoked tofu jerky.
Made in the home factory out in Lakebay, Smofu has a loyal following both here and internationally. You will find it on line at Smofu.com or 253-884-2917, and only available right now by ordering by phone or inline, but an excellent snack or backpacking/snowboarding staple.I keep telling them I want a cool T-shirt too, so maybe after you become a Smofu-disciple, you can help me convince them!

This next week Golden Monkey Trading Company is giving 20% of our sales to Emergency Food Network. AND we have a tea that benefits the Clouded Leopard Project. So it’s a bit of a two-fer. With over 70 different varieties of tea and accessories—there’s something for every tea taste.
Visit www.goldenmonkeytea.com for a full listing.
If you haven’t already been there and know it intimately, Gateway to India has the best Indian food in the state! Right on 6th Ave (2603 6th Ave) at Oakes.
They have a wide variety of dishes, including lots of vegetarian stuff. The owners are a couple of guys who live here in town with their families. You can surprise and delight your friends and family with gift certificates.

Just heard Calendula on I St is closing it’s retail store December 24th, (rumor is they will continue their landscaping and art), and will offer items at 30% off until December 24th.
Brown and Haley’s outlet store in Fife is a must. You can’t have too much Almond Roca boo boo’s to share.

I think a small local charity guide and local merchant guide would be well placed!

I always find a unique gift or two for one or two unique friends from the Traditions Fair Trade collection at The Antique Sandwich Company (5102 N. Pearl, just up the hill from the entrance to Pt. Defiance Park). Tamie, Shirley, Dick, and crew have been responsible for this landmark restaurant and community-central since 1974. Traditions Fair Trade started within the Antique Sandwich in 1993, then Traditions Cafe itself opened in Olympia. Although a smaller selection compared to the Olympia store, at the Antique you can find good, reasonably-priced hand-made gifts from more than 50 countries. Good stuff you can feel good about buying.

How about making a glass float for Christmas? I have my kid signed up at the Tacoma Glass Blowing Company where she can have a one to one session to blow a glass float or paperweight for $65.00. They take 8 years & up.

Don’t forget about the Waste Free Holidays info put together by the City of Tacoma. A number of places offer discounts for “experience gifts.” This includes gift certificates to places like Vin Grotto.
(How about the Shanghai Acrobats at the Pantages for a unique gift?)
I love the Art-O-Mat over at BKB:
“Art*o*mat® is a retired cigarette vending machine that has been converted to vend art. With over 83 active machines all over the country and one in the UK, BKB is the first gallery to host one in Washington. For a $5 token you can become a collector of works by one of over 400 contributing artists.”

One-time event, and not available on-line, so I hope this counts:
Along the lines of “artists, and small businesses that have invested in our community,” Sat., Dec 9. is Tempest Lounge’s First Annual Trunk Show. “Come Support our Local Artists, so your holiday shopping here at Tempest 4-6 pm. Enjoy holiday shopping, as it should be with a glass of Champagne” Local artists, such as Jennevieve Schlemmer (who just finished a Mosaic installation at Kandle Park Police Substation) will have gift items for sale. I’d bet my paycheck that Teddy will be there, too.
