The Marcato Condomium project at the corner of 15th and Tacoma has installed its public art obligation. Our first cameraphone image has arrived from a dedicated tipster. It’s quite blue…

When I first saw that the other day, from a distance my first reaction was that a tarp had come off of the roof during the windstorm and gotten caught on a light pole… Once I was closer, it made much more sense.

Dang. And that Festivus pole in front of it is just plain big.

I live across the street from this thing, and find it creepy and awkward. Thing is, I doubt that “creepy and awkward” is what the developer was going for. Does anyone find this attractive? Can someone help me understand why this thing was chosen to adorn the corner? I mean, it’s better than Bellevue’s fiberglass bucks project- http://www.actoneguild.org/bucks_pace.html- but can someone please help me understand why this blue thing is in a prominent location downtown rather than, say, Chuck E Cheese?

It’s in Tacoma. Its art. Its edgy. Its edgy Tacoma art and it appears to be abstract and purple.
For a piece like this, it may take years for us to appreciate all of the transcendent subtleties and to “get it.”
(Whatever it is, it’s the best improvement to the area in 40 years, so I am not being picky. For the record though, it looks like a giant purple penguin umpire declaring a touchdown)
Seal, that’s a good one. I thought it was an elephant on the first take.
Too bad they didn’t hook up this plaza area with more basic pedestrian ammenities like say, oh a park bench? Or two?

I was thinking elephant (and fearing Barney) until I drove by it last night. I know these sometimes take a while to…take, but with all due respect to Paul, I give it a thumbs-up. Instead of seeming out-of-place, I feel it instantly pulled that area a bit more out of the muck of the past and establishes it as part of a legit uptown-downtown. I think it’s a fearless, big step forward. To me it has a presense reminiscent of Hammering Man. (Although lacking automata-action, that I would really dig.)

Yeah. It needs a name. I suspect it already has one from the artist. Maybe we need to give it one until we learn of the official name.
How about “blight fighter”? Any other ideas?

Me again. For what it’s worth Jesse, when I drove by in the daylight this morning, it struck me that it appears to be painted the same shade of blue as that used by the Blue Man Group.
