According to Spew, the Blue Olive, our source for martinis in the aura of perfectly blown glass, is closing after Saturday night.

I saw this one coming a long time ago. Residents above the bar were complaining about the noise, so they removed most of the speakers/subs and the club atmosphere was done.

What a great place. Sad to see it close. I think it would have thrived in a different location.
Of course, a number of businesses have closed on the Foss as the developments have been delayed. Yet Pacific Avenue by the UWT has thrived.
Also shows the importance of having as many people living down on the Foss as possible and making it as easy as possible for pedestrians to get from downtown to the Foss.
With that said, I expect the place to re-open again one day perhaps with a different name.
hmmm… The cars in the Thea’s Landing / Blue Olive garage were plastered with flyers for a New Year’s Party a couple weeks ago. Something like $60/head. I’ll have to see if I can find a copy of the flyer still floating around.

I can’t say I’m surprised and unlike some of the other posters, I’d say good riddance! I’ve never seen more attitude, poorer service, high prices, and lousy food in such a combo. People, this is Tacoma! (which doesn’t mean that we don’t know good food or atmosphere. We just don’t need a lecture or snooty attitude with our mediocre food & drinks). I know that it’s in nothing like the same league, but if SIX Olives were to close – now, that’d be a tragedy! THAT’S the place to get a mean martini – made the right way.

Totally lame but I hope to see more reasonably priced food attractions find thier way down to the Foss – if Johnny’s only sold fish n’ chips on that side then that would be great.

Ouch. First Blue Olive and then…..(From Spew)
Cucina! Cucina! sold
First Blue Olive, now Cucina! Cucina! No! No!
The Italian franchise restaurant Cucina! Cucina! has been bought out and will close at the end of January 2007. The Weekly Volcano has only confirmed that the Tacoma Mall location will close. The fate of the Redmond and Issaquah locations is unknown. No further information on the buyer is available as the corporate office in British Columbia is closed for the holidays until tomorrow.
(Although it was by the mall, I liked the place. I guess there has to be some thinning occasionally)

It looks like the news of the closure of the Blue Olive was a bit premature:
Blue Olive opened along the rejuvenated Thea Foss Waterway in 2004. New management took over in August. Blue Olive closed last week. Its owner says he’ll reopen.
Blue Olive owner Kevin Glagavs says the Foss Waterway martini bar will be back. Glagavs said the Blue Olive’s closure last week is temporary.
“We were vandalized,” he said, referring to a broken window on Blue Olive’s patio door. “We wanted to take this opportunity to do some renovations. Three years in the restaurant and nightclub business kind of takes its toll.”
Glagavs said Blue Olive’s original owners have reassumed management. He said Blue Olive would reopen sometime in early 2007.
