Watson's Public House on Union (27. December 2006, 16:27 by Derek Young) ~ When Do The Doors Open?

For the last few months we’ve heard rumors that Barry from the Rosewood Cafe had a new idea swirling about. Now we think we’ve found it. Apparently the old medical supply building at South 12th and Union is being repurposed into the Watson’s Public House – Barry’s new project. A little watering hole in that neighborhood should be a welcome addition. We look forward to providing you with a report from the bar…

Suh-weet!

At one point I heard Forza was building a coffee house at that intersection…maybe that has fallen through.

Anyway, it’s cool to see 12th (“The original 6th”) starting to take off.

There is still some contsruction right on that corner lot. I think this medical building is 1/2 a block off of 12th. I would love to see more redevolpment along 12th especially in the area between Cedar and Sprague. But Union is a good walk away.

MW, based on one of your comments in the storm-related threads, I think you live pretty darn close to me. Like as close as a block, perhaps. So howdy, neighbor…

I agree with you on the Cedar-to-Sprague section of 12th. Seems like we could do a bit better than a mattress store, a war simulation (!) store, and several crappy mini-marts. (Though I have a soft spot for the organ repair shop and the tide book publisher…)

On the positive side, the city traffic planning department is actively working on looking at the 12th Street corridor to determine possible beautification and/or calming techniques along the corridor. Possible ideas include wider sidewalks, bump-outs, bike lanes, reduction of directional lanes of traffic, addition of medians or center turn lanes, more plantings, etc. (I stress that these are all ideas and no solution could include all of them.) Any changes of course would be contingent on the impact to the traffic through the corridor, which can be quite heavy at times, but the hope (at least for neighbors) is that 12th could become a more pedestrian-friendly road instead of the east-west speedway that it currently is. One can hope that with beautification and more pedestrians would come better retail tenants.

Re: 12th & Union new corner construction

I also heard there was a coffee shop going in. Forza should do well there.

Re: 12th Street development
Looking at the success of 6th Avenue with such little new development, it makes me wonder how 12th would do if it were re-zoned from residential and minor commercial to mixed-use. I would think it would be an improvement.

Sweet! A decent public house withing crawling distance to our house!! My enthusiam isn’t premature I hope. Seriously, it would be an interesting start to the 12 street corridor. Would it connect 6th to 12th and make it an “area”? I don’t see how the traffic could be calmed much. It’s not that bad during non-rush hours but it is horrible between 5 and 6:30pm.

No offense to the faithful readership, and I apologize in advance for causing any eye-rolling or gut-wrenching resentful head shaking, but for the tragically unhip like myself – what is a “public house?”

It sounds like uber-cool esoteric term for what is known as a bar, or tavern, or coffee shop? The Freighthouse Square serves liqour and its open the public, is that a public house? The YMCA is a semi-public facility and it houses people, does that count as a public house? Are there shops at a public house? Is there a membership fee or secret knock?

The sad part is, Im not being facecious, I’m really serious. I need an explanation and wikipedia isn’t as fun….thanks!

what is a “public house?”

Basically – it’s a really wordy way of saying pub.

A public house, usually known as a pub, is an establishment which serves alcoholic drinks for consumption on the premises, usually in a homely setting.

Just walk down any street in Great Britain to find out what a “public house” is. The name suggests that it will have more character than your typical watering hole—more along the lines of some of Tacoma’s new public houses such as Doyle’s or Paddy Coynes.

Hopefully there will be a lot more to talk about on 12th in coming years.

drizell,

What would be your suggestions for development along S 12th?

I just received the rezone application for the S12th & Union corner lot where the construction is happening. It appears to be something like the building on 6th & Orchard, 5625 sq ft retail building w/ 25 parking spaces. It does indeed provide for a drive through, however the business is unspecified. They are seeking to rezone from C1 to C2. The hearing is set for March 8th at 9:30 am.

Good job Barry and thank you! You can walk from your house to work! I can walk my dog at the park and catch a brew. Our neighborhood needs something cool like this. Kudos my friend…
