Let It Snow! (10. January 2007, 23:26 by Derek Young) ~ Send Pictures

I went into class tonight and it was blissfully calm outside. Two hours later there were six inches of snow on the ground. As I left for home I watched as two cars failed to make the turn where 19th meets UWT – by the Swiss. Getting home was a bit epic with abandoned or stuck cars all over downtown. Good luck everybody. I hope you’re having fun.

Kids built an 8 foot snowman in the middle of the intersection of 19th and Yakima. Then a Tacoma Police officer came and knocked it over with his patrol car (on purpose). He then told them to move what was left of it out of the street.

Didn’t even have a chance to get the camera.

Can anyone tell me what the King 5 weatherpeople are smoking? We just watched the 10:00 news on KONG and they mentioned that Tacoma had 1 inch.

Dude, I have seven in my backyard and it hasn’t stopped yet.

There’s two great hooker-snowmen on the corner of Fawcett & 7th. It’s a sledder’s paradise on the 6th & 7th between Fawcett and Broadway. Happy ice-scraping!

I would just like to say how proud I am to live in such a cool place. I walked down St Helens, down 9th, through the Fireman’s park, had a drink at the bar, headed up the Spanish Steps and came home to warm up. During that time I met so many nice people out for a walk, the fellow at the Pantages was playing guitar… I feel like I live in the biggest small town!

I abandoned my car at the Matador. Schuster is crazy! It’s going to create some big problems tomorrow morning if they don’t get some cars out of the way.

I posted some pictures of my walk up 9th I took with my cell phone cam. There’s a cool picture of a snowboarder going down 9th that I particularly like (especially for a cell phone cam).

Derek mentioned the Swiss and 19th. A car came sliding down the hill past the Swiss smashing into a pole on the UWT campus. Bob and Nobby immediately closed the Swiss for the night.

There were at least 50 people in Wright Park snowboarding and sledding on inner tubes. There was also a stranded bus on 6th and Tacoma Ave.

The best things about all of this was the absence of cars – the people took back the streets (7th and Fawcett) and had a lot of fun. I wish that neighbors could do things like this more often.

Unofficial measured total downtown as of 11:30pm was 6.5 inches….

Snow Day!! Why do the words still bring joy and excitement to the heart? Doyle’s closed early last night and the traffic down Tacoma was slow. Lots of people were out walking. Such a wonderful sight.

There are some great photos out there this morning waiting to be captured. Unfortunately, I’m sitting at my desk at work!

I was trying to get back to my beautiful McKinley Hill home at 8 p.m. last night and it took me 45 minutes to do so.

After witnessing four accidents before doing a 360 by 21 Commerce, I pulled onto Pacific only to find a COMPLETE mess.

Normally I head straight up Pacific to get home, but there were little cars crashing into each other and spinning out all over the place trying to get up the hill.

I made a rather gutsy move and decided to take McKinley Ave. because I figured most people wouldn’t have the courage to do so.

Hooray! I was right.

I gunned in the center of the road, all the way up the hill, and made it home, no problem.

I’m very grateful for my SUV (sorry environmentalists) and 4WD.

But now, you can’t pay me to leave this hill with all of the compact snow and ice.

As such, I’m also grateful for telecommuting options :).

Stay safe and warm, everyone!

I drove around downtown for a few hours from about 2 – 4am taking photos (click my name below). It was a lot of fun… The 6 or more inches of snow that north Tacoma and downtown got is just crazy!

I agree with Chris from the Theater District. My husband and daughter (I’m not fond of cold) were out sledding at Wright Park and reported that it was a party atmosphere, lots of people and comraderie. We were commenting on how we wish this would happen more often…It was great to see neighbors out socializing.

Yes, it was a nice night for a long walk around town, up the Landmark steps to Doyle’s and down the Spanish steps to Meconi’s. (How’s that secret e133 handshake coming along?) There, an elderly stranded souple were cared for until someone gave them a ride. Meconi’s beer garden was a front-row viewing to see the poor motorists funneled down Pacific, many trying unsuccessfully to get up the hill beside the Old City Hall. Engine #1 barreled up with no problem, however. Stadium way was a mess, too, but the city looked beautiful. Thanks to those who took the time to take and share photos.

Oh, yeah, where are some good (and safe) long sledding hills?

beautiful pics! wish i was there to experience (and wish it happened more often)

I ended up leaving the car downtown last night after a music rehearsal. A couple of close calls with cars running red lights and the endless line of cars on s.b. Pacific Ave (I was hoping to take the long, less-steep way out South Tacoma Way and back up Pine/Cedar to get up the hill) were enough to convince me that even if I could handle the conditions, I couldn’t handle the other motorists. So I parked my car in the alley behind my office, stashed my trombone up at my desk, and walked home. Once I was there, Melissa and I headed back out to check out the huge snowmen at Jason Lee and the general fun and cameraderie along Sixth Ave. No camera unfortunately, but a good time was had.

This morning? Snowshoe trip down to the office, threw the chains on the car, and Melissa took off towards her office. So while it might be more fun partying out in Wright Park, here I am at work. But the view across the water to NE Tacoma is absolutely beautiful!

If anyone is looking for a place to sled, go up McKinley and along Upper Park Road—there are a couple of block long hills just above McKinley Park that are calling for you. Nice view of the snowy city to boot.

I just finished a walk through the Stadium District and North Slope. It’s amazing how many people are out, walking around, saying hi to each other, and generally being neighborly. This is the kind of community I’d like to see in Tacoma every day, not only when the streets are covered in snow and ice and nobody wants to drive. Maybe the solution to building community is to just make all the roads in town impassable! But, for now, I’ll just enjoy that today has been the way it has been.

Anyone know if they’re picking up garbage tomorrow? Can’t seem to find out anywhere…not in the newspaper, TV, City website…??

Today was beautiful even when it was annoying. It really made me appreciate the beauty of this walkable neighborhood I live in.

Maybe the solution to building community is to just make all the roads in town impassable!

I knew there was a reason the road improvement levy failed this fall: voters were just trying to build community and encourage people to choose walkable communities. And now the City Council is pledging to improve the roads (and destroy the community) anyway.

(I’m confused about how much of my own comment is sarcasm. Oh well.)

Can anyone comment on how the roads in Tacoma are today? Is it difficult to go from 705, Stadium exit, to Stadium HS??? HELP!!!
