Paddy Coyne's Update - The Sign Looks Good (22. January 2007, 16:33 by Derek Young) ~ Guinness is Calling

This mysterious cell phone pick arrived in our inbox and we had to share. Paddy Coyne’s is looking good. The sign is so new and shiny. The word on the street is that the latest pub to land in Tacoma is going to open on Wednesday the 24th – a mere two days away. 100th Monkey. New Pub. This is going to be a good week. Thank you, Erik.

YAY! Another pub within walking distance! If only there was a tapas/sangria place, I could put away the passport. We are excited for Paddy Coyne’s. Welcome to the ‘hood.

Now this IS good news. Has anyone been to Paddy’s Seattle location? Any idea how committed they are to the showing of football? Their website mentions it, but in Seattle the hub of football is the G&D and I haven’t managed to make myself check out Paddy Coyne’s yet. They do mention Setanta on their site, and that’s a damn good sign.

Oh, man – I’m making another upbeat post!

Oops. I meant say “soccer” instead of “football”.

The photo of Paddy Coynes is mine taken on a Samsung cell phone as I was walking down the block.

I missed out on all the photo tours last weekend so I thought I would give it a shot.

Pat and his crew did an incredible job.

The restoration woodwork, 100 year old bar, and antique lights are spectacular and certainly take the restaurant and pub scene in Tacoma up a level or two.

I visited the Paddy Coyne’s in Seattle a couple times and the happy hour deals were some of the best in South Lake Union (and that says something). They did a pretty good job at making it look authentic even though it’s in a brand new building. I’m excited to see the restoration in the Tacoma location.

...there sure are a lot of “Erik’s” on this blog.

Yes, there are a lot of Eriks here. My folks swear they didn’t know anybody giving a child that name when they chose mine (May ’76, in the Virginia Mason parking lot).

My middle initial is K.

Man, this place sounds really good. I’m going to have to check out the Lake Union Paddy’s this weekend and see if they actually put the footy on. If they do, then I’m really going to start getting enthusiastic about the pub.

Anybody know what used to be in this now restored location?

Here’s the good, bad and the low down on the Olympus Hotel and the various restaurants and venues that have been in the space including this colorful entry:

TNT 2/5/1968 (ad – “See the Strobe Light” and “Andrea, Only Girl That Can Do It” performances in the Mirror Room)

Definitely excited to see this place! We’re gonna have to come up with a name for that northern part of downtown like “Pioneer Square” or “Belltown” etc. Wasnt it referred to as “Whiskey row” at one time? Would resurrecting this title be seen as to “gritty” or dirty for the new Tacoma? Also I love watching footie at Doyles, they have all the big games on two screens.

footie = soccer

Ok. Its official. Paddy Coynes is open to the general public starting tonight (Friday) at 5:00 p.m. I just saw a sign on their door.

That’s in 45 minutes.

Cool – I actually crashed the opening last night… I had no idea it was a private party! The building looks great; lots of dark wood, some old fashioned lighting, postcards from ireland.
A few large TVs, one visible in the main seating area near the bar, and another in the back room that’s got more seating.

Beers include Smithwicks, Guiness, Harp, Boddington’s, and the Paddy Coyne’s IPA (actually made by Pacific Rim – it’s the Rat City IPA, I think), and a few others.

So far so good!

Sounds great. I’m looking forward to checking this place out.

I wonder if they might be persuaded to carry Tennent’s as a nod to Paddy’s ancestral neighbors. I could go for a Tennent’s right about now.

Tennent’s. I’m salivating.
Someone in Tacoma needs to serve this.

Guess what?

I just talked to a staff member.

Apparently, Paddy Coynes is considering serving breakfast in the next month or so.

Breakfast? In Tacoma? Downtown? Wow.
