Coffee and Rhetoric for February 1st (29. January 2007, 08:36 by Derek) ~ Does LID Impact You?

The first episode of Coffee & Rhetoric, Tacoma’s newest community forum, is set to roll on February 1st. The first topic is set and should interest you…

“The first week we will be discussing how the LID project construction planned for the Theatre District is going to impact those local retailers and how that in turn will affect our community and we will be brainstorming how the community can support pioneering retailers to create a more exciting city to dwell in. Rebecca Dashow, owner of Dame Lola wants answers and we will try and give them to her by putting a secret guest in the hot seat to answer her questions. Come and put your two cents in or just learn more about your community and the issues shaping it.”

I saw this on the myspace page for Coffee and Rhetoric

Looks interesting. Apparently, they are going to have a merchant effected by the LID go head to head with a public works employee from the city.

Here’s the recipe for Coffe and Rhetoric:

-Coffee, as much as you can stand! (and we know how you love your coffee Tacoma)
-1 java driven jabber jawed host
-2 variable guests
-1 musical co-host
-YOU and all of your friends
(Stir it up vigorously, let sit for 1 hour and enjoy!)

Coffee and Rhetoric is a live weekly talk show in TACOMA. Each week, we bring together two diverse and intriguing Tacoma characters who may not neccesarily see things eye to eye, and hold an open discussion on the subjects that matter in our city. A new musical guest will join the show each week both as a co-host, and to perform a song or two as the mood strikes…. We’ll be serving up a cup of stimulating conversation with a lump of edge and asking you to participate. The idea is to identify problems, conflicts, miscommunications, or new ideas, and bring out those who can do something about them as guests in an attempt to find answers and solutions and just stimulate the cerebral cortexes of this fine city. Discussions are open ended and audience members are encouraged to particapate in and direct the conversation. But don’t worry, this is most certainly no City-Hall meeting.

Starting February 1st, Coffee and Rhetoric takes places every Thursday night from 7-8pm at Cutters Point located at 1936 Pacific Avenue, sandwiched between The Harmon Brewery and UrbanXChange.

Here’s the description of the host:

WHO THE HELL IS JOSH CARTER? Our host: Tacoma fan, former punk rock star (of popular local group Durango 95), SOTA alumni, resident snark, current student of Evergreen State College studying Social Documentary Photography.

Me and the wife should be there — it’ll be interesting especially in a small venue like that.

Rebecca from Dame Lola and George from the City, the Project Manager for the LID, were both there. Julie Anderson also sat quietly in the back listening until she was called out with a policy question relating to keeping small businesses afloat during on-street construction.

It was interesting but a little lost. Hopefully, the direction/organization will get firmed up a bit as everyone gains some experience.

For those interested in the subject, there will two community meetings on February 7th at 9am & 7pm. This will be interesting to keep an eye on, particularly since the construction will take 2yrs starting late this spring.

This is a fun issue.

Right now, Broadway is one way going North. St. Helens is a two way street.

The City of Tacoma has suggested that Broadway be turned into a two way street and that St. Helens be turned into a one way street north (up the hill).

It looks like a no-brainer for Broadway, everyone agrees that the street should be two way as it is wide with little traffic on it.

The last issue is should St. Helens be changed? If so, should the city’s suggestion be implemented?

Coming from the Stadium area, I always take St. Helens south with the Bostwick building on the left. Most cars I see are taking the street the same direction I do.

Thus, I would think that the best patterns would be to make it one way south. Of course, just keeping it as currently designed is an option as well. I am not sure there is really a problem that needs to be solved with St. Helens.

Making St. Helens one way north would be a mistake in my view as no one wants to travel that direction on it and drivers would have to park facing up the hill which is a little strange.

Making St. Helens one way north would be a mistake in my view as no one wants to travel that direction on it…

Tell that to a bicyclist trying to get out of downtown.
