Here’s the first drawing I’ve seen of Multicare’s new emergency room set to replace the – now gone – First United Methodist Church.

Doesn’t look too shabby. Can’t replace that lovely church though.
It’ll be interesting to take some shots in the same location once the new facility is built. Out with the old, in with the new.

It sort of reminds me of the 1980s. Not bad overall, though.
An emergency room is a good thing to have. Of course, it would be even cooler if they could have built this on the Mueller-Harkins site and used the lobby portion.
Sorry! Can’t seem to help it!

I’m glad to see they are integrating the historic character of the neighborhood into this building. Is that concrete or are they re-using the bricks from the church that was torn down?

Despite losing the church, at least the site is being infilled. This is preferable to the strategy of nearby St. Joseph’s: tear down entire blocks of the Hilltop to use for surface parking. I think if I were in an accident, I would request to be taken to Tacoma General simply to support the hospital that does infill development. And much of their parking is in garages.

That’s sarcasm, right Morgan?
I hate to say it, but the more I look at this the more it screams “Bellevue 1985”. Then again, the kids love the dance music these days, so maybe ’85 is cool again.
Drizell: I’m with you. Can we get some medical ID bracelets made up that indicate blood type, allergies, and urban design/land use values?

“St. Josephs’ only in extreme emergencies.”
St Joe’s has more density in their main tower though- doesn’t that make them more preferable?

Hmmm…good point. Maybe we can cut a deal if they’ll agree to hang some sort of covering or paint the sides with a picture of a different building.

Yeah, good point, Morgan. St. Joe’s is the only tall building visible (except for Pacific Tower) from both directions of I-5 as you’re nearing the downtown area. If not for a 10-story building on top of the hill like that, out-of-towners may think Tacoma is just an extension of Fife or Lakewood.
