In our downtown wanderings today, a very sad and disheartened little bird mentioned to us that the Tacoma Actors Guild closed its doors last night after the final performance of Proof. The details are still emerging, and we’ve heard a few things, but we’ll let the official announcements speak for themselves. TAG’s curtain appears to have closed once again. Good luck to all involved.
Update: Two days later, a few questions over at Erik Emery.com

Watching the rise, fall, rise, and fall of TAG over the years has been a roller coaster. If the rumor is true, how does it reflect on the climate for professional theater in Tacoma? Personally, I think we’ll make it. We’ll pick up the pieces and make something new, special, and very Tacoma. It may not be in our immediate future, but it will happen. I’m an optimist. For good or for bad, I’m an optimist.
Kind of an awful feeling when I’ve just started to realize it was there (along with the rest of Tacoma’s art scene). One can hope that with energy like that behind the Horatio floating around, there will always be a vibrant theater community here.

I was able to go see Proof on the last Friday of its run. I like the script and the production was well done.
I was disappointed to see maybe half the seats were full. However, at $28/seat it makes it difficult (for me) to make this a spur of the moment addition to an evening. This is probably part of the reason that I was one of three people there under 45.
If TAG goes, I will miss it. I remember attending back when it was at St. Leo’s.
(As a side note, I never was able to get the box office on the phone even though I punched my way through their maze of automation. I had to make an extra trip to the theater to get tix. Both automation & trip were frustrating.)

I’m also a former TAG employee (in the early 90’s) – I’m so sad to see it go. I’d like to think that we did good, consistant work there. Hopefully, some new group will utilize the space…

I’m an employee of the most recent TAG—It was a long, hard and painful two months. I’m relieved it’s over and we can all move on. I firmly believe good theatre breeds good theatre and do think the changing needs of Tacoma will foster the kind of change needed for a pro house to survive. All the best for the support and discussion.
