Tacoma Census Data in Google Earth (13. March 2007, 08:07 by Derek Young) ~ Geek Time

We’re always a sucker for good map data. The folks at Juice Analytics have merged census data with Google Earth to provide us with population density, median age, and male/female ratio in each state at two levels of detail. The image above shows median age data for Tacoma:

Lighter is older median age (white is 46.0 years median age), Dark is younger median age (black is 29.0 years median age)

It’s interesting. Much of it makes sense. The University of Puget Sound is young. The Stadium District and our most expensive neighborhoods are older. Hilltop is generally younger. The neighborhood to the west of Pearl and North of 30th is older. I could look at this kinda information all day long… Zoom in! Zoom out! Woo hoo….

Download the data and check out your neighborhood. You’ll need Google Earth. Data downloads at:

Wow. I love some juicy map data as well.

Look at the male/female ratio map, it’s pretty interesting.

The East side is overwhelmingly male, the UPS/Proctor area and the West End are primarily female, and the South End is more evenly mixed.

Interesting. The East side is also older than the West and North.

Is the proper term “cartogrophile”?

I like cartogrophile better than geek, but since I am an accountant I am probably already a geek by definition. But what a great map!
