Temple of the Bean To Rise Again (20. March 2007, 10:37 by Derek Young) ~ Drinking Beautiful Coffee

Whoa… the flashbacks. The Spew is reporting that a coffee shop will be reopening in the old Temple of the Bean space. In case you don’t know where that is, it’s the little shack of a space above Supernova at Division and I Street next to Burger Bar and the gas station. I used to walk a couple miles to drink coffee in that place… back in the early nineties. Crazy memories.

Ditto. Up late on a Saturday night … a couple hours watching improv, then walking over for coffee … but I guess you’re not supposed to sleep during college …

This place ruled.

It was small and funky and kept getting broken into. However, the area has changed alot since then.

Can’t beat the location. The Stadium District seems to be at the forefront of new life in Tacoma.

Yep… I did the ‘watch improv, then go to temple of the bean’ two step many, many saturday nights. I’d often stop in sometimes after going to shows in seattle – always really interesting people there.

And Marc doesn’t even like coffee.

Do any of you remember Buzz City? I watched a couple of bands in there… before it closed and became the Subway.

Yes, I remember Buzz City.
It really does seem like there were more live concerts (at least in the indie rock vein) in, oh, 1993 than there are now. And that ain’t right.

And who can forget Mother Records, right underneath TotB, before they moved over to the Merlino bldg.

True, erik s. I hate coffee, and hung out in the coffee shop anyway. It was cool, it was open late, and you didn’t need to be 21.

woah. After performing a few improv (ala sketch comedy) sets, or possibly before, that was the closest place to TLT for coffee.

Be nice to have a small place back on that part of town especially after Grandfields grew into a condo project.

way off-topic:
Am I crazy or did there used to be a Taco Del Mar where Margaret’s is now (9th & St Helens)?

It was a PLANET BURRITO !

(I think.)

Well, they used to be the same company … ahh, I remember the baby days of Taco del Mar, then Planet Burrito, then Tacoma del Mar again …

But back to the main topic, if this new place is anything like what was … kind of a tiny, late-night cross between Shakabrah and Black Water … that would be phenomenal. It’s nice to have late-night, multi-age options that don’t require you to or assume you should be dancing or karaoke-ing. I know I appreciated such a spot before I was old enough for the bars, and I have a feeling I still would …
