This just in:
An Earth Day celebration that looks back at the first habitat restoration along Commencement Bay and looks ahead to the new initiative to clean up Puget Sound is planned for Saturday, April 21, at the Middle Waterway.
The day features a restoration workday sponsored by Citizens for a Healthy Bay and a visit from U.S. Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.). Other sponsors are the City of Tacoma and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal agency that acts as a trustee on behalf of the public to protect and restore coastal and marine resources.
Volunteers will work at the Middle Waterway Shore Restoration Project, the first site restored under the Natural Resource Damage Assessment process led by NOAA. The site is owned by Simpson Tacoma Kraft Co., a major partner in the clean-up. Since that project was completed more than 10 years ago, six additional projects have been completed along the Middle Waterway, including several led by the City of Tacoma.
A program at noon will focus on the history of the site and the benefits of collaborative efforts to restore marine habitat, as well as highlighting the contributions of volunteers to the restoration process. The celebration will also note the launch of the Puget Sound Initiative and what it promises for the future.
People interested in volunteering to assist with the workday should contact Gina Quiram at (253) 282-2429.

I’m glad Simpson is helping meet its responsibility to clean up the bay, but I wish they’d do one better and close their stinky, noxious pulp mill. When the wind is blowing from the right (i.e., wrong) direction, Simpson’s headache-inducing aroma is still very apparent.
On the other hand, Simpson’s continued operation will probably make the new downtown condos more affordable than their builders are hoping.
