According to the readers of American Style magazine, Tacoma as art destination ranks just above Salt Lake City and just below Minneapolis (in the 100k to 499k city category). Who reads American Style and what does it mean? I have no idea. Who else is above us in our category? In order:
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Albuquerque, N.M.
Las Vegas, Nev.
Scottsdale, Ariz.
Atlanta, Ga.
New Orleans, La.
Honolulu, Hawaii
Miami, Fla.
Tucson, Ariz.
Savannah, Ga.
Minneapolis, Minn.
Just wait a few years… I’m an optimist.

Go Tacoma! That’s an impressive list of other mid-size cities to be ranked among. Let’s just make sure we don’t price all our artists out of finding a place to live in town.

It’s their 10th Annual Readers Poll, though I don’t know how long that question has been in place. Maybe that is the essence of the poll and therefore this is the 10th time. My question then is, what year did we make the list? I wonder if this is a first.

Having lived in both Minneapolis and Salt Lake City I’d say it’s a fair assessment. I’m not so sure, however, how Pittsburg hit the top of the list.

Hi there Tacoma-ites! I’m the PR manager for AmericanStyle. Thanks for posting this!
Here’s the history of Tacoma in our annual readers’ poll:
2006—#23
2005—#22
2004—#8 (combined w/Seattle)
2003—#24 (combined w/Seattle)
We’ve been breaking it out by city size since 2005 (which is why before that year, Seattle and Tacoma were combined).
As far as Pittsburgh is concerned, 2007 has been their “Year of Glass,” and they’ve got a lot of important art events going on throughout the year.
Feel free to contact me or our editor with any other comments you might have.

What!? Pittsburgh is trying to steal glass from us?

Nice jump from 23 to 12 from 2006 to 2007. Of course making the top ten would be nice. Then we would get to go on the tour. No, wait, that’s American Idol.
What I do like is that it is a readers poll, so even though that may stack the deck in some cases (subscription and circulation in some cities)it is a definite indicator that people are seeing a better side of Tacoma.
That’s quite honorable. We do have a gritty mix of artists here, and some amazing talent (known and unknown). I hope Tacoma wakes up and starts recognizing the magnitude of our arts talent, and what it means to the health and vibrancy of our community. We are already at risk of losing a great # of our artists. Anyone interested in fostering the sustainability of our arts community should keep their ears open for random “Arts Incubator” conversations around our fair town. Don’t hesitate to eve strop! In fact JOIN IN!
