Garden Parties! (26. April 2007, 10:21 by Derek Young) ~ Grow It

Tacoma’s “Growing Conversation” about the needs and potential of our local community gardens is taking shape with the promise of some action.

We learned last week that there are more community gardens in the greater Tacoma area that we initially thought. And several folks representing the different community garden efforts mentioned many opportunities to get a choice plot, but also the fact that even 20 minutes of someone pulling morning glories on a lunch break could be a huge help.

So, someone pondered, what about a roaming work party?

Something where folks could come once, come twice, or come all the time. Something where conversation about the future of Tacoma’s community gardening network can continue, while taking action to nurture what’s already here.

It’s in the works. So let’s keep talking, and get to work.

For more information, keep an eye on www.tacomagardens.com.

I’m all in. Thanks to everyone who showed support and interest in what is taking shape at our humble garden at S 10th and M.

Thanks for working to rehabilitate the 10th & M garden. I find myself in the area quite frequently and will be happy to see people bringing it back to life. Perhaps your presence there will inspire some of the people that work at the adjacent Centro Latino offices or the Housing Authority offices to maybe do a little gardening on their lunch hours as well. Without a doubt, gardening is one of those things that brings neighbors together. I usually had an audience when I was mowing my lawn and applause when I was done, you’d think I mow that lawn more than twice a year given the response from the neighborhood.

Just spent approx. 7 hours in my plot in Proctor – a patch of rocky, weedy soil now resembles a garden! Better yet, I got to meet my neighbors – the community part of community gardening doesn’t really hit you until you meet the awesome people down the row :) I’m all for joining a work party when we can get one organized!
