This should be a great introductory program for the series. While PNW architectural history is relatively short in span of time, it is nice to be able to recognize and appreciate the styles and their origins. Granted, while many houses are naturally an amalgam of styles, or have been updated throughout the decades, there are also many pure examples of each. It is good to see this relationship develop between Commencement Lodge #7 and Historic Tacoma. As described in a recent News Tribune article by C.R. Roberts, the Lodge used to be a center of social activity in Tacoma, not the mysterious structure it came to be, known only to history buffs. The Castle Hall room where these presentations will be held is is the perfect setting and it’s good to see it once again playing host to more people.

Thanks for the lead on this one. The Pythian Temple was wonderful to stroll around and I learned quite a bit about PNW architecture. After Dr. Swope had taught us the general aspects of the classic forms, she gave us architectural puzzles to solve: misconstrued updating. Some buyers want a Victorian even if they’ve purchased a Craftsman…and set about with a conversion. Very amusing and will be fun to drive around Tacoma and spot these beauties.

What a great first Historic Tacoma lecture it was indeed. I am much looking forward to the rest of the series. Turnout was amazing. I am happy to know just how many poeple love Tacoma and have an open eye for places worthy of preservation. Dr. Swope made a point of reusing buildings to keep them off the landfill. I totally agree. It is much preferable to use up empty lots before tearing down strong structures to make way for new ones.

It was fantastic to see so many people come to the lecture. I think that everyone enjoyed themselves and that the upcoming lecture topics will be as popular as the first one. I am looking forward to seeing the turnout for the remainder of the series.
