FYI, There is a great book by Terry Meany called Working Windows that helped me open, reweight, rebuild, and otherwise make operable the nonworking windows in our house when we bought it. Yes, every single window was painted shut—sometimes nailed as well for good measure. The book appears to be out of print but worth hunting around for, and if anyone is in desperate need for just such a guide drop me an email and I’ll try to find my copy to loan you. ...and how to appropriately replace old windows.

In my opinion, the only way to properly replace old windows is with the same old window. I believe “almost” every old window can be repaired to an operable state.
I have personally rehabilitated all 30 severely neglected double hung and casement windows (plus jambs) on my bungalow and only had to remake one lower sash due to severe structural damage.

Additionally, no matter what the window companies tell you, there is NO APPRECIABLE energy efficiency gained here in the PNW from replacing classic wooden window designs if they are in proper working order. For some more authoritative info on what I am talking about, check out Jane Powell’s outstanding book Bungalow Details
I hope they instill these points at the lecture; too bad I cannot go.

Last week’s program was super. Looked like over 60 people in attendance, and if the there are ghosts in the Castle Hall of the Pythian Temple, they are surely happy that the room was being used by so many, and for such a good purpose. A fair amount on “young preservationalists,” too! Geez, that’s not a shabby portfolio Legacy has, and I wish I knew about Bear Wood Windows long ago when I sought out appropriate, yet realistic solutions. Their website leads me to believe they offer a wide range, from the high-profile mega-buck resto to the everyday home-owner, which is very refreshing to see for a change. The eyes of a house, inappropriate windows can do a house so wrong. And it’s usually easier to do them right. Can’t wait ‘til Thursday.

The book working windows is available from Amazon. It is priced from $129.00 I hope for that price that it is an amazing resource! I would love to take a look at the book as I have several old windows that need to be restored.

Scott:

Yeah, it looks like that’s scarcity pricing since it’s out of print (I think it was under twenty originally). Shoot me an email and I’ll try to dig it up this weekend.

Gulag: No doubt, and kudos to you for your windows—that is hard, hard work. I can’t tell you how many times folks came before the Landmarks Commission when I served on it, wanting to tear out every good wood window in their house, to be replaced with the cheapest vinyl ones they could get at Home Despot. They would claim it was about heat loss, but when you pressed them, it often came down to them thinking that old windows were “icky”. Go figure.

UPSpatrick, I attempted to email you….but it bounced. I left a VM for you at UPS. I would love to borrow the book if you’re willing.
