The Exit133 City Council Candidate Forum (12. May 2007, 10:12 by Derek Young) ~ Here We Go!

Exit133 is proud to announce our first-ever candidate forum.

We will host a candidate forum for City Council At-Large Position 8, Tacoma’s hot seat this year. Four well-supported candidates from varying backgrounds are in the race for the seat currently held by Bill Evans.

At 7 p.m. on June 21st, join Exit133 and our host, the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, at the Theatre on the Square for a chance to hear first-hand where the candidates stand and what they have planned for our city.

Tacoma residents have a lot to think about these days, so we decided it’s time for a little face time … time to take the mounting dialogue in our comments and on-line forums into a real-world discussion. Let’s match some faces to names and voices to faces.

All four Position 8 candidates have confirmed they will be at the Town Hall. The candidates, in alphabetical order, are:

  • Marty Campbell
  • David Curry
  • Jonathan Phillips
  • Marilyn Strickland

Exit133 is not here to take sides, we’re here to help the candidates make their positions known and let you decide. I will moderate the discussion. We’ll post more information as we get closer to the event regarding format, how to submit questions and a few other minor details.

See you at the Square!

Nice. Tacoma doesn’t have a tradition of having many candidate forums so this is a good event.

I think Coffee & Rhetoric may have smaller forums for candidates as well this year.

The filing deadline for Tacoma City Council is June 8th, so we should pretty much know who is going to running by June 6th.

There is some background information on the announced Tacoma City Council candidates and links to candidate’s web page in the Exit 133 Forum – Elections 2007.

Are the citizens and bloggers running this forum or your downtown cronies?

This is 100% Exit133 with venue support coming from the Broadway Center. When did we get cronies?

Great job Derek, and nice pic in the newest edition of City Arts.

Isn’t there an age limit to be able to get cronies?

Great job Derek! Looking forward to the event.

Thanks for hosting this, It will be nice to see all four of these candidates together. I encourage ALL to be there. This is a very important race, and the candidate who takes this seat will have a grand opportunity for creating change. Tacoma is “Ripe” for it. Bring your best game Guys and Gal.

The more opportunities for candidates to discuss their positions, the better. Kudos for getting this organized.

By the way, do bocce cronies count?

As one of Derek’s downtown cronies, I have to ask: “What’s wrong with cronies?”

I hope John Hathaway gets around to registering so we can talk about him here.

Also, Is Marty going to be edited out of the Broadway Center appearance?

GREAT IDEA! Lets talk about parking :)!!!

One thing that will be interesting to watch with new candidates is how much they discuss issues that aren’t related to policy areas the city council has direct involvement in.

I just want to know which candidate can text message the fastest.

1337 5p33k

I haven’t seen much of it around Exit133, though I’m sure there are plenty of 1337 5p34k3rz who understand.

(message cracked me up because of it’s unexpectedness)

For those who can’t wait for June, I received an announcement via e-mail for another opportunity to meet the candidates:

“May 21st at 7pm we will be hosting the annual 27th District Democrats Candidate Forum… we hope you can join us to hear from candidates and ask them a few questions.”

The newsletter goes on to say that candidates from a number of the City Council races and the Port of Tacoma races will be at Commencement Bay Coffee. I guess any Democrats in the 27th District are invited. I think that’s North Tacoma.

You should allow direct audience questions – it gives people a greater sense of participation, even if they don’t ask questions themselves.

A strange editorial in the Tacoma Weekly today (which is unfortunately unavailable online).

It states Stenger has filed and Walker now has him as an opponent.

My understanding is that Stenger has decided not to run and is sticking with this decision. However, they may know something the rest of us do not.

16 | Posted by Erik B. | May 25, 11:19 AM

Everything I hear is that Stenger is out. He “registered” with the PDC a while ago. His last filing was at the beginning of May with a few contributions coming in after his late April decision. I’m guessing these helped pay those final bills.

Offical “filing” for candidates is the week of June 4-8th with the Pierce County Auditor. If you file here you are on the ballot. Until after the close of filing we won’t really know who is running for all the races.

Hmmm. That is an interesting factoid with various interpretations.

Thanks for organizing this – I hope to make it!
Will there be “I’m one of Derek’s downtown cronies” t-shirts available?
