First Night Hits a Milestone (23. May 2007, 16:39 by Derek Young) ~ Congratulations!

When people started meeting a few months ago to start talking about First Night in Tacoma, there was a little problem of a past debt. Well, in a little over a month, First Night has raised the money needed to receive a matching grant from Metro Parks and clear the debt. Now there’s still some paperwork and process to go through, but once done, checks can be written to clear the past so we can start planning for the future – beginning with this year. Congratulations to everybody that helped First Night hit this milestone.

First Night already? I haven’t taken down my Christmas tree from last year. Come to think of it, I didn’t take it down last year either.

It’s never too early to put First Night on your calendar. :)

It’s already on mine. Really, you can check.

My, you folks really do think ahead. I am glad to see that First Night is on its way back. Maybe now I can get over the guilt of not going to First Night over the last few years, before it disappeared from the scene…

It was Metro Parks Foundation’s priviledge to assist First Night’s rebirth. We were glad to be able to come up with a solution. Paperwork and check will be exchanged May 30. It’s on all of the MPF Board members calendars to come and join in the fun.

Ooh. The past debt is pretty significant. Who is working to revive this?

The past debt has been whittled down over the last two years, and the final checks should be cut to those we owe within the month. Thanks to everyone who pitched in! We’re looking forward to turning the lights back on this New Year’s Eve.

If anything, this is a bit late to actually begin fundraising for such an event—less than a year away. Some corporations and foundations take an entire year to get requests through their pipelines. But better late than never!!

I hope the community will rally and support First Night with dollars and volunteers to make it a reality.
