New Starbucks for Sixth Avenue ( 2. June 2007, 16:15 by Derek Young) ~ We're Out of Coffee... Panic!

For those coffee junkies out there – Starbucks is opening a new location at 2012 6th Avenue – the corner of 6th and Sprague. Better parking than the 6th and Pine location. On the way to the freeway. Makes sense to me.

Thank you, Jake

I want Temple of the Bean Back in Stadium. Does anyone know if this place will arise again?

I did look at the (former) Kickstand renovations today. They must have been reading Exit 133. They are starting from (nearly) scratch. You will not recognize much of it when they are done. Let’s hope that’s good.

“Starbucks is opening a new location…”

Just what the world needs.

Kevin you had something posted a while back about a Walgreens going in there. I wonder if that is still the plan. Also there is already a drive-thru coffee place , Sorrento’s (?) at that location. That space seems too small for a Starbucks.

Jake,
Maybe this is a new concept store: Walgreens inside a Starbucks.

Say what you want about Starbucks…we’d kill for one in the McKinley Hill Business District.

Just what the world needs.

This area had some real potential for a nice enjoyable, attaractive neighborhood commercial center.

There are certainly alot of residents in the area and a school next by to make it a great urban area to enjoy oneself.

However, in its current for, it is little more than a nondescript strip mall and the changes to it do not look to improve the area. People drive in, acquire their desired “product” and drive out as quick as possible. Not a place to hang out at or take a picture of.

The torch down one story buildings are all set back from the street on all sides making the area car centric in the extreme.

Worse, it has a drive through in the front of it making it foreboding for anyone considering walking to the area.

Thank you, Eric B. I frequently walk through the neighborhood including that area. It seems to attract all kinds. What will happen to Sorrento’s? They are a local business with decent coffee, but only drive thru and walk up service. I’d like to see them stay even if it means not having yet another Starbucks.

I, for one, welcome our Starbuckian overlords.

I can’t get a coffee in this town after 8:30 in the evening. 72nd St. is too far to drive on those late construction project nights. I’m for it.

Both The Mandolin and Firehouse Coffee are open evenings. Why another Starbucks? The one we already have on Sixth Ave produces so much trash, the public cans in front frequently spill over and garbage blows down the road. Revenue gets siphoned to big Sister.
What ever happened to Go Local? Local meaning Burger King, Starbucks and Walgreens in T-town??

Let’s get those Jason Lee students addicted to coffee. Get ‘em young and lock them in as devoted consumers.

My be this will help grease the skids for a cross walk for the Jason Lee Kids. Just need a couple of city council members there drinking coffe at 3 o’clock when the kids are dodging traffic. Kids from the hill are used to that kid of stuff though.

I’m not sure what you mean, hilltop guy. Statistically, more people are injured WITHIN crosswalks than outside them. Dodging traffic is a way of life there. Will probably never change.

Absolutely. There is so much more potential on this corner. Unfortunately, the post reinforces the current car biased form: Better parking than the 6th and Pine location. On the way to the freeway. Makes sense to me.

Funny thing is it’s the focus on the car and commuters that would be great to change. (& let’s get rid of that epileptic strobe in the coffee shop)

I hope they have a drive thru and serve breakfast sammiches.

Penelope (and others), if you’re looking for late night coffee — the 72nd St. Starbucks is not your only option. Here are some “Go Local” options:

Blackwater (downtown on Fawcett) is open until 9.

Mandolin (about S. 12th & Proctor) is open until 10 or midnight depending on the day.

Firehouse Coffee (on 6th & Union) is, I believe, open somewhat late … I can’t remember how late just now.

And Bertolino’s Coffee (on Union, near Target) is open 24 hours.

I guess we can’t use the “How do we go local if it ain’t open?” excuse for coffee. That excuse only applies to downtown. ;)

Thanks Tacomachikadee.

Thanks Tacomachikadee. And thanks for using “Go Local” Jake.

There could never be a claim that exit133 readers/Tacomans aren’t a clever bunch. Thanks for the witticisms:

“Maybe this is a new concept store: Walgreens inside a Starbucks.”

“Let’s get those Jason Lee students addicted to coffee. Get ‘em young and lock them in as devoted consumers.”

Maybe a new tag line for T-Town should tie in something about ‘a city with a sense of humor’?

I concluded that fans of Exit #133 ( I am) HAVE A HUGE SENSE OF HUMOR !
and a love affair second to none with this City of Tacoma…......

Worse, it has a drive through in the front of it making it foreboding for anyone considering walking to the area.

I went by there yesterday and there appears to be actually two drive throughs in this relatively small business center, both on the edge of the area.

By its design, the center announces “stay away unless you are driving a car.” Of course, with the unattractive design, why would someone want to hang around there in the parking lot? Get in, get grub and get out. (And they do).

(& let’s get rid of that epileptic strobe in the coffee shop)

The strobe is probably needed to get the attention of commuters flying by.

pretty soon, we wont ever have to get out of our cars at all. students @ jason lee can just drive through thier classes after they drove through the kitchen and got drive through hugs from thier mothers on her way to her drive through hair solon. then we wont have to worry about crosswalks at all. in fact starbucks should just hang buckets from that 7 way intersection on 6th and sprague, you’re gonna hang out there at that light for at least 15 minutes regaurdless of if you buy coffee or not.

I sense a poem coming on.

It was probably the Judicial Annex, the old Jeff Smith restaurant that was located by the former UPS law school that had the first espresso machine in Tacoma. It was a temperamental beast Jeff imported from Turkey. There were very few people that knew how to use it and even fewer people that could repair it. I believe we have to thank Jeff Smith, the Frugal Gourmet, for introducing espresso to Tacoma. For a while, in Tacoma, we had two of the great TV chefs living here at the same time. Jeff Smith, of course, and Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet.

Some of you might remember Jeff Smith’s wife Patty Smith. She had a bookstore on Court C between 11th and 13th. Downtown was also blessed with two incarnations of Fox’s Books. First on Broadway and then later on St. Helens. The bookstores are different, the coffee shops are different, even the TV chefs are different. Tacoma changes but it also feels the same.

Some day I’ll go on about the original Pinch’s at 6th and Sprague. I’m fairly certain they were in the coffee roasting and espresso business before Starbucks started up in Seattle. If Tacoma played her cards well way back when, it would most likely be Pinch’s we see everywhere instead of Starbucks. And the sandwiches they would make. It is not the same today, but one can dream.

daniel blue makes me want a segway – or maybe just a golf cart.

(Ah, Jeff Smith – TV Personality, putting Tacoma on the map back in 1988.)

Tangentally, last night I heard an interesting point of view from a long-time Starbucks employee. She claimed that because so many people dislike Starbucks’ business practices (and penetration in urban centers) it actually HELPS smaller coffee shops prosper. Anti-Starbucks coffee drinkers search out “anything but Starbucks.” In other words, Starbucks is a gateway coffeeshop…and once you’re experienced, you realize that Starbucks is for the indiscriminating coffee afficionado. AUTHENTIC coffee lovers actually go down the street to “Greasy Roy’s Coffeepot Corner” (or whatever). I don’t know if I buy it; sounds a bit convenient. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting argument.

Incidentally, there IS drive-thru/walk-up coffee haus there currently. No indoor seating though, closes at 4 or something. I suspect those Jason Lee kids (of which mine is one) who can afford a morning mocha patronize the joint.

Ah yes Chaplin Jeff – Follow the legal issues link above…. ‘He settled out-of-court with the 7 plaintiffs and never returned to the airwaves.’ ‘We love the cover photo, which captured a beaming Smith—who has a turkey in his lap—flanked by two cherubic Boy Scouts’.
