Local school wins at "5th Avenue Awards" ( 5. June 2007, 11:18 by Erik) ~ A new Tacoma theater generation?

Since 2003, the 5th Avenue in Seattle has held their own mini version of the Tonys for Washington State high school musicals. This year, 78 high school musicals were considered.

The winner of Outstanding Overall Musical Production this year went to a Tacoma high school, Bellarmine Preparatory, for their production of Urinetown. Yeah, that’s really the name.

It’s the first time a Tacoma high school has taken the top prize in the competition (former winners include Kentridge, Kamiak, Olympia, and Shorecrest).

The awards ceremony, which includes song and dance numbers from all the nominated musicals, will be broadcast on TVW on Wednesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. and repeated on June 8 at 3 and 11 a.m. and on Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m.

Congratulations!

Kudos to all the kids and those who worked the show for their Best Overall Musical win, and also to Bellarmine’s Music Chair and Choral Director, Frank Lewis, as they also won for Best Musical Direction. Four of their students were nominated in the acting categories as well. I went to this show and thoroughly enjoyed it on all fronts.
