Harold Moss to Run for Position 1 ( 8. June 2007, 12:53 by Derek Young) ~ Fun!

Harold Moss, former mayor and Pierce County councilman, has announced that he will run for the position 1 seat against incumbent Spiro Manthow. At least we’ll have a race to focus on other than the at large position 8 seat… This should be interesting. Today’s the last day to file. Who’s next? Anybody?

Check the list for Position 3. It’s certainly expanded.

Wow- things are getting interesting!

I was going to suggest a write-in campaign for the exit133 party, but the slew of candidates is looking too good! I agree with Mayor Baarsma though that voter turn-out will be low. However, the discussion leading up to it should be lively!

Today’s quote from Moss

“I’ve just decided that I’m still to young to retire,” said Moss, 77. Moss said he wasn’t motivated by any particular issue as much as his strong desire to serve the public.

Wanting to participate is good for the community. However, it doesn’t make much of a compelling case for running for city council or to replace someone. I respect his honesty, yet without a policy difference between him and Manthou, he doesn’t make the case for running.

Manthou is a “very nice guy,” Moss said, but he was mildly critical of Manthou’s relative quietness on the council.

Given the heated debate on council in the last couple of years, I would think having a few people on council (out of 9) being relatively quiet would be a plus.

Also, I am going to vote this year on the candidate’s substantive positions and voting record, not on how loud they are or how much they filibuster.

so his restraining order isn’t valid during city council meetings? Or has that expired?

What is the restraining order story?

I agree that feeling “too young to retire” does not do much to justify why anyone should vote for Mr. Moss.

I’d go a little further and suggest that it is a bit arrogant to think you are entitled to voter support without a platform of some sort.

Lastly, being a former councilmember and mayor for the city in my mind is not necessarily a positive checkmark, looking back on the government’s 30 year track record.

Will Baker has been in the past a frequent attendee to Council meetings and consistently is arrested for disorderly conduct. He is, I think fair to say, obsessed with the Brame fiasco and convinced there is a grand conspiracy.

As an amusing sidenote, in 2004, he filed to run as the Republican candidate for state auditor, and the Republican party accepted his candidacy without checking his background. Subsequently they tried to get him off their slate, but were unsuccessful.

At the time, Councilmember Kevin Phelps described Baker as “a former exotic dancer, an ardent conspiracy theorist and an intelligent person “who has the ability to put a train of thoughts together — they’re just not real factual.”“

Scarily enough, he garnered over 400,000 cotes statewide by ticket voters, even though there was no campaign and his voter’s guide statement was clearly a bit off.

Will Baker has a nice, trustworthy-sounding name.

no matter what position Baker is running for I vote for him….There is quite enough pomposity in politics…and his views aren’t any goofier than Julie Anderson…

Violet, I can understand why Vodka is part of your name! You must have been hitting the VOX when you wrote that his views are no goofier than Julie’s. Could you give us one example?

Maybe Moss will tell us more about his platform in the coming weeks – an announcement like this isn’t necessarily the venue for that. Or, maybe he just wants to rouse Spiro from his torpor. This will require Manthou to articulate an agenda as well, something he wouldn’t have to do running unopposed or all but.
