So, the word on the street is that the old Blue Olive space on Dock Street will be reopening as Woody’s Wharf the first or second week of July. From what we hear, the plans are to keep the bar as is – including the ice ring. We saw the liquor license a few weeks back, but these are the first additional details we’ve had pass through our inbox. Welcome to the neighborhood!

Yeah, thats a terrible name for such a swanky place. I dont think this spot is going to work for anyone until most of the sites on the Foss are filled in with condos/apartments/hotel/office/retail/and a more focused GLASS museum/etc…But good luck to the new owners, I’ll definitely give em a try.

I walked by the store and saw liquor license and I got excited. Hopefully they have some good affordable food. If they can hang on a bit the new condos will be coming online very soon. I am excited to check it out.

I’ll give ‘em a go. Anything to breath life in that waterfront dead zone.

I heard they were going for the boating crowd (besides locals) with the new moorage right outside their doors.

As to filling the other open spaces… they really need parking. According to the Blue Olive guys, the Thea Foss won’t allow any parking in their building, so that just leaves the lot under the MOG and the MOG has first dibs if they are holding ANY kind of event. Parking or lack thereof seems to be the issue with filling open spots down there on the Esplanade.

That’s true. I never went to the Blue Olive because parking has to be easy to find to convince me to check it out.

The parking situation could be a bit of an issue, but I think it will take a while for the place to catch on. I am excited for its arrival, I live in Thea’s and can’t wait to have a place that I can crawl home from. (;

Unfortunately, the city is considering eliminating 200 on-street parking spaces on Dock Street which requires everyone to basically park in a garage.
It takes a much more motivated driver to park in a garage which is bad for business. Hence a nukber of businesses have already failed on the water.
Seems to me the name is a bit too similar to Johnny’s Dock, no?

From Jake:
“When I went to the Blue Olive I brought people from out of town and always parked over by the UWT and walked across the Bridge of Glass. That was a bit cooler then parking on the boring Dock Street.”
Jake, more of us have to do this sort of thing. Your parking strategy is brilliant and it does a great job of showing off Tacoma. The more people see of Tacoma from a walking perspective the better. Walk, bike, use the link, it is all good and puts Tacoma in her best light.
You people out there know how terrific Tacoma is, just make sure people get a good look at her.

I’ve parked at Thea’s Landing. It is a limited number of stalls though. Was $1.50/hr for dinner, $2/hr otherwise. (Not sure how they checked that.) They even took my credit card.
If Thea’s is full the MOG lot is next door and there are surface lots just south of 15th at something absurd like $3/day.
Lack of free parking I think is the issue. The Blue Olive was attracting people who were going out to drink. I’m afraid many of their customer’s mindset was that the $5 they could spend on parking would come out of their drinking money. (Note the list of establishments that have $5 valet parking are not geared at the people with limited drinking money.)

“Blue Olive is History” folks….lets get ready to welcome the new vision of the “Woody’s” checkbook—-head on down to the iced BAR after a visit to the CANS !

A quick internet search found a Woody’s Wharf in Newport Beach, CA. Interesting photos.
Any connection?
I see, by the photos, where they get the wood in Woody’s Wharf. It does seem they cater to the lumber industry.

MichaelK is right on in terms of parking. If the glass museum lot is full, which is very rare, there is affordable public parking on the North side of Theas with a direct door out to the restruant location. If you sadly can’t take transit or walk, I can’t see parking being that big of an issue.

I live in the Thea Foss building and while having a restaurant there will be nice, the late night drinking crowd that was loud and frankly somewhat obscene after a few drinks was a bigger problem than the parking.
