The Foremost Dairy Building at the corner of South 25th and Pacific has new owners. We wrote about it back in February of last year when the listing first appeared on our radar. Now…
New owner planning renovation for this highly visible building. Great location just of I-5, near UW Tacoma on light rail line. Ideal for retail or office – owner is open to a variety of uses.
So, the owner is open to variety of uses. This property could be an anchor for redevelopment in this neighborhood. What do you think this high visibility corner needs?
Link to the property’s hotsheet.

I’d kill for a loft with those big windows. The property has a light rail stop across the street, frequent bus service, and lots of parking within a couple blocks. I’m guessing there will be some kind of retail with lofts above. Right now, the biggest draw in that area is the Jack in the Box across the street, which attracts lots of shady characters.
Totally love that building. Would be a great spot for a grocery. But lofts would be pretty cool too, especially if they were sold as raw space instead of finished luxury condos.

I think I screwed up my post – so here goes again. Not sure if the following are appropriate for this site, but I have long had three things on my wish list for DT Tacoma, in no particular order of preference:
Nordstrom Rack, Delaurenti’s Italian Market, and a Tom Douglas restaurant (Serious Pie or Palace Kitchen would do nicely).
My $.02

:sigh:
Yes…because Tacoma needs more lofts/condos/yuppies.
A grocery store would be awesome, as long as its less expensive than Stadium Thriftway. I dont see the point to having another high-priced grocery store, we already have a few.

It’s going to be tough to get businesses to dwell there because of the shady Pacific Lounge next door and that notorious Jack in the Box across the street.

Although PCC has no desire to open in Tacoma, nor does Whole Foods Market (I’ve contacted both), I agree that something along those same lines would be welcomed. There is no good place for local organic produce, and with all of the condos being built downtown, there does need to be a grocery store. Tacoma could also use a medium size concert venue similar to the size of the Showbox. There’s nothing size-wise between that of a local bar and the Tacoma Dome.

I have to believe that any neighborhood served by the Link will improve in time. I’ve been in the Jack in the Box at various times and it is not pretty. I’ve often wondered how they managed to stay in business for as long as they have in that location. I guess the future should be very good for them if residential and more business comes to the neighborhood.
People keep hoping for a good sized grocery downtown. I’m assuming they want something within walking distance of them or right off the link. I think downtown is actually too big to have a grocery that would be central to all of downtown. Let’s say downtown goes between the university and 6th avenue along pacific. A central grocery would be between 11th and 13th. People are not crazy, apparently , about walking up hill so something along Tacoma Avenue would be out of the question, though the old Labor Ready building might be converted into a cool medium sized grocery. I’m just thinking there really isn’t any good place for a downtown grocery that would be pedestrian friendly for the neighborhood at large, maybe I’m wrong, I’d like people to think of the perfect downtown location for a grocery.

There IS a grocery store going in at 25th and Yakima, which is only about 6 or 7 blocks away. I think a grocery store downtown is a great idea as well—just not in this location. Think about it…you want a store that everyone can walk to. This building is at 26th and Pacific. There is almost ZERO residential use at all within 5 blocks of this site. The nearest is probably 21st and Pacific or up on the hill around Delin St. The link only runs until 8 pm. I do think it would work out well as a permanent home of the food coop, in that that would be a destination store that people wouldn’t mind driving to from across the city. And it’s got that great covered loading dock.
I wonder if there is enough parking for this to be a good office location for a medium-sized company…maybe a tech company or something. Perhaps I should be talking to my bosses… :-)

I think what I’d like to see is some small specialty kind of food retailing. I’m thinking a real bakery, a real produce store, and maybe a real deli. Kind of like it was back in the old neighborhood in NYC. Couple that with a butcher and a fish store (oh we have a fish store downtown) and a person is pretty much in business. None of the stores would be really large, just specialized and would no doubt attract shoppers from outside the downtown core. I’m sure Johnny’s Seafood draws from all over Tacoma and the region.

not only do I want a grocery store of some sort in the Foremost Building…..I even have a name…..Dairy Air Foods…..oh wait, no, make it another condoooooo project…...Dairy Air Estates…..

that would make some cool lofts. no doubt the developer would convert them to hi end luxury garbage latex condos.
on a different note.. back when I was in high school, my band played at NEENERS on the corner of the same block following a gig at the former site of Club Impact. NEENERS was by far the biggest dive I have ever been in. Is that place open still?

Don’t forget we now also have Dave’s Meat & Produce. Great little market (1312 North I) that seems to be thriving. They have quality cuts of meat at decent prices. It’s fun to try out the numerous marinated varieties and other ready-to-cook recipes. The produce and flowers aren’t too shabby either. (Exit133 posting, 11/11/06)
Seems the PCC, Whole Foods, Marlene’s type of business is more needed.
