The old Taboo space at 9th and A is starting to look pretty good. The wood is looking nice. The windows are cleaned up and… you can actually see through them. The bar is stocked. It’s official – Cans will open its doors tomorrow.

Some may question whether a bar that specializes in canned beer is your kind of place. Well, here’s my take on it. They may have Adams Family Pinball in a few days. That’s all I need to know. Productivity goes way down…

I swear the moose’s eyes follow me everywhere I move. I’m also fairly certain the moose winked at me.

A downtown venue. A cool building. Beer in a can. A moose head. Every seat has a view. What more does one need?
(It appears from the photo that they do have beer from kegs and a full bar as well)
Lots like the Theater Distict is continuing to pull itself to its feet.
Now one can make quite a run from Maconis, Matador, Vin Grotto, Paddy Coynes, and now Cans.
By the way, Paddy Coynes, Matador and Vin Grotto now have outdoor beer gardens.
That does sound like a fun “crawl”, Erik. Since I still haven’t been to Matador and (sadly) Vin Grotto that might be a great way to do it.

This looks great. I remember the old days when that building housed the Pacific Rim Restaurant, one of the only reasons to come downtown Tacoma in 1990. That north end of Pacific is now getting critical mass. What I wonder is if there can be enough development North and then down by UWT to force infill around the parking tombstones. I’m growing convinced that these are a big part of what is hindering more commercial/retail development in the core area.

Yes, the parking tombstones as the mayor calls them represent major damage to Tacoma’s urban fabric downtown. The south parking structure is slated for renovation which will repair 6 – 7 retail shells on Pacific.
The North Parking structure is about as bad as it gets. The city needs to rip it down and start from scratch. The sooner the better.
Paddy Coynes, Matador and Vin Grotto now have outdoor beer gardens.
Is that what they’re called? I think of them as outdoor cafe seating. Guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder.
Either name, way cool!

As Ive said before, all we need now is a movie theater in this neighborhood and then you’ll REALLY see the street come alive in the evening. Exciting times for Pac Ave!

The Rialto is a movie theater. Not really used much for movies, but a movie theater it is. I like the idea of the Mecca becoming a mainstream movie theater, it is my hope that it contributes a little life to downtown. It is funny, the downtown that we want today is the downtown that was urban renewaled away some 40 years ago. What will they be saying about our downtown 40 years from now. Will people want the downtown of today or will they wish for the downtown of 80 years ago? I hope we get it right this time.

Here’s the report from the front on CANS
The official opening of Cans last night was without a doubt the place to be. “Tacoma’s finest dive” was filled with gorgeous people and high energy for the friends and family gathering that started at 6 p.m. and then the public grand opening at 9 p.m. The place was loud with fun music and lots of conversations, but that’s just how I like it.
There it is.

Its a great place. Despite their name, they have draft beer as well. I checked it out last week. Now Capers Restaurant (701 Pacific) which opened today joins them as new businesses which opened in June in the Theater District.
I was there last Friday night and the place was packed with young sexy hipsters. GREAT music all night long—Soundgarden, Dire Straits, Sublime, etc…and the crowd really got into it and was singing along. Also the videos of all the songs are shown on the various flatscreens in the place. I was very impressed and I think it’s going to be a successful joint.
