Broadway Center's New Season (20. June 2007, 14:54 by Erik) ~ Big year for the Center

We’re happy to see that the Broadway Center has some great acts coming to Tacoma in the 2007-2008 season.

We noted Garrison Keillor, former US Poet-Laureate Billy Collins, “Cirque-Works’ Birdhouse Factory” (a la Cirque du Soleil and the Moscow Circus), and some sort of Grateful Dead Experience. That’s just a few highlights of more than 40 acts the BCPA has scheduled. That’s a significant increase over previous years, so kudos to them for getting more people downtown and casting a much wider net of people’s interests and tastes.

Of course, Exit133 will be there tomorrow night for our Candidate Forum, but it looks like we’ll be there pretty regularly next year, too.

Note to Garrison Keillor, this is Tacoma, not the “Seattle Area”. That guy that does the glass is from Tacoma, not the Seattle Area. Think of Tacoma as the St. Paul to the Seattle Minneapolis.

We’ll know the Broadway Center has arrived when they book Neko Case. Less local but equally impressive would be Gillian Welch, Cat Power, Built to Spill or the like. There’s no reason Broadway Center shouldn’t be able to steal these kind of acts from Seattle once in a while (or offer an second show in the Puget Sound area if record company contracts allow it). The Capitol Theater in Oly does it quite often.

I agree with Michael G. More music at the theaters! Especially Neko Case!

Nice calls MichaelG, esp. on Gillian Welch, she would be perfect at the Pantages and just the kind of artist I think would go great there.

David Fischer and Benjii Bittle are going to prove to be a great team for the Broadway Center, bringing significant booking acumen to solid business, marketing and fundraising skills. Just what the Center needs.
