There’s an interesting new project in the works down on Broadway that is bringing something very different to the Tacoma art scene.
The Helm Gallery will open at 760 Broadway in the Bostwick this September.
Why did a new art gallery grab us so much?
First, they are attracting some well known national and international artists for their first show The Kindness of Strangers. The creators of the gallery, Sean Alexander and Peter Lynn, used social networking sites and on-line resources to find artists they liked and sent them an e-mail, asking them to “help a stranger.”
Second, we are bowled over by their Residency program. The Helm is not only bringing art to Tacoma, but they are bringing the artists as well. Artists who are displaying their work at the gallery and want to work while they are here will be offered a small bedroom and studio to work out of.
It’s not a vacation for artists, but more of a chance for them to get away and work in a new environment—ours, specifically.
It sounds like a very direct way to get great artists into town help get Tacoma some recognition on the world Art Scene.
We’ll keep you updated on this new art project for Tacoma.

I know both Peter and Sean—they’re good guys, and I am very excited for such a cool project in Tacoma. Well done!
