Help Shape the Water Ditch Trail (26. June 2007, 08:38 by Derek Young) ~ Act Now! Get Involved

The City of Tacoma is moving ahead with plans to restore parts of the Water ditch Trail as part of a citywide non-motorized transportation network. Phase I begins with a three mile segment between South 54th and South 72nd Streets. Subsequent phases expand the network from South 41st to South 80th Street. In total, the Water Ditch Trail will be 6.5 miles and connect South Tacoma with the Tacoma Dome District.

A public workshop is scheduled for this Thursday, June 28th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm to provide public input to help guide future design, funding, and construction of the Water Ditch Trail.

So, to all you bicycle folks, the RSVP passed a couple days ago. Ask anyway…

It’s not too late if anyone is still interested in attending this workshop but hasn’t rsvped. A neat partnership between the City and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department with support from the State Department of Transportation is making this possible. People complain about the lack of accessible bike/commuting routes in the city—-if you’re one of those folks, then come out to this meeting and learn about this great new route and its connecctions to others (existing and up-and-coming) in the city and provide your input on this trail. Thanks for posting this, Derek!

Dang, it’s tonight. But it sounds like a great plan. I’m looking forward to benefiting from it and would like to learn more! It’s good to know that fresh new ideas aren’t always limited to downtown.

To bikes and green spaces! Check out www.greentacoma.org for more about parks and trail restoration, and the City’s development of the Open Space Plan. The Parametrix and ESA Adolphson firms are contracted by the city to undertake a triage of Tacoma’s publicly-owned green spaces and main wildlife habitat corridors. Public input is needed for the OSP and for park stewardship efforts. This is a new and exciting collaboration between the City, Metroparks, regional and grassroots habitat restoration orgs. The next Green Tacoma Partnership quarterly meeting is on 7/11.
