Art On The Ave 2007 - Follow Up ( 8. July 2007, 19:08 by Derek Young) ~ Closing The Streets. Having A Party

I was lucky enough to make it out to Sixth Avenue today and check out the scene at Art On The Ave. It was packed. The food smelled good. The dogs were friendly. The weather was perfect. The music was great. “Chaos Into Order” was quite the event with sewing machines humming away, various performances, speeches, and songs at the mic, and a tower of paper rising on the street. On the other hand, I was scolded by a nun for various unmentionable city activities she somehow knew about…

Here are just a few photos. I was doing more dog walking than photo taking. I’m sure Kevin will have more up soon.

Thank you to the fine folks at Masa who provided Druthers with a much needed bowl of water.

This event just keeps getting bigger and better every year—much fun and your Recommended Daily Allowance of funky weirdness. Many thanks to everyone who put it together!

It was great this year. I think this is our 4th year attending this event and this year was by far the best.

I’m sorry to hear Commencement Bay Birkenstock is going out of business though :-(

Yeah, I’m really bummed at the prospect of any of the Sixth Ave retail stores going under. It’s great to have some good stores that aren’t restaurants. Wonder if we’ll get yet another one in that space now…

This was my 4th or 5th year at AotA, and I thought the CHAOS folks were well the highlight – of all the years I’ve been! One disappointment, however, was that the food offerings were considerably thinner from the past few years when there used to be many more trucks and far more variety. My companion and I left a bit hungry; and you’re supposed to leave a street fair a bit sick from eating too much, eh, street food! Any idea why there were so few food vendors this year compared to previous years?

We are not sure why less food vendors signed up this year. We have not imposed any restrictions, as long as health department licenses are okay.
Art on the Ave is an art festival –so we hope you do not leave a bit sick from food, but rather inspired by a piece of original art or some new artist friends you made. Overindulge in food at the Taste of Tacoma – Overindulge in art at Art on the Ave.

Here representing the Dockyard Derby Dames :)

What an awesome time I had with my friends on Sunday! LOVED the CHAOS, the chainsaw guy, the cars, and the vendors were really good as well. Didn’t feel like there was too much of one thing…rather a great variety.

As for the food, we found plenty of restaurants open and willing to serve! Why not patron the establishments? But yeah, I agree about the “street food”...we were ready for some strawberries on a stick and gyros. The Italian Ice from the guy on S. 38th is AMAZING!

ok, so here’s a video from the “Last girl standing…Asphault Assault” Dockyard Derby Dames demonstration. 6th & Oakes 3-3:30 pm July 8, 2007.

I had a lot of FUN at Art on the Ave, I was one of the Artists in Action: Make Art Not Waste, you can see pics of the event on my artblog: http://rubyreusable.com/artblog/

all the artists and art demonstrations are what made this years Art on the Ave great. well done everyone! thanks for everything.

as far as street food goes – I remember Art on the Ave always being a bit thin on the “fair food.” the proctor arts fest is worse.
