What the nascent Tacoma Food Co-op needs right now is simply people to commit to being members of the place – were it in fact formed.
If you are interested in:
seeing a member-owned co-op in Tacoma; having a store that focuses on local produce and products; being part of a store that will listen to you if you want it to carry something, and; joining such a co-op; then write to tacomafoodcoop@gmail.com and tell Amber to mark you down as interested in membership.
It’s that simple.
The group forming this co-op needs to have the names of 600 people who will be interested in being members before it can start its formal feasibility study, which will lead to actual fund raising, which will lead to an actual physical location.
Don’t be shy – let Amber know you’re interested if in fact you are. And if you know anyone who would also be interested, send them this email. And if you’re not interested, ask yourself why. Why does Olympia have two co-ops and Tacoma zero? Why does Seattle have fantastic co-ops and Tacoma zero? Why do those places see such value in co-ops?
If you want to get involved in helping form the co-op, ask Amber when you write her and she can help you figure out how to help.
If you’re already on the co-op email list, try to find it in your heart to forgive me for spamming you with this email. It’s for a good cause.
Seriously. It’s time. Our email has been sent. Send your’s today!

Tacoma needs a Co-Op downtown. I am sending my email in.
By the way, Bellingham has had a Co-op since 1970 and is opening another branch of it soon.
Here’s a statement from them:
About The Co-op
The Community Food Co-op was established in 1970 on the south side of Bellingham in the Good Earth Building in a space equivalent to our current produce department. Like many co-ops around the country that sprang up in the ’70s, our co-op grew as a result of the new “health-food” movement, where people were looking for wholesome, inexpensive food. What happened could never have been predicted: with the growing interest in good food sold in an honest setting, the Co-op outgrew its tiny space and moved to a second location on State and Maple Streets. The Co-op moved yet again in 1994 to its current location at the corner of Forest and Holly. Our growth has been reflected by many co-ops nationwide because of people’s desire to refine and re-define what they eat. We are fortunate to be located in a community that has helped and sustained us through the years. After all, “Food” may be our middle name, but it all starts with “Community.”
Tacoma may be one of the few large cities not to have a Co-op. Between Downtown and Hilltop would be a great location.
Here’s a few I found:
and of course the obligatory:
Not only does a food co-op bring great local food to the people, they bring great local people together. My involvement in co-ops in other cities always helped me find other ways to become more involved in the community.
I know some folks think food co-ops are all granola, bean sprouts and Quinoa but the best part for me was always that if I wanted extra spicy Velveeta, they’d order a case just for me. Keep in mind they can do this for your favorite wine as well.
