Foss Hotel... Delayed (24. July 2007, 07:44 by Derek Young) ~ Sand on the Foss?

It’s been a long time since we’ve mentioned the proposed hotel to be located between the Esplanade and Thea’s Landing. Well, according to the News Tribune, it’s been delayed again. Apparently getting a financing commitment on a 100 room hotel with 22 condos isn’t as easy as it used to be. Someday…

I forgot, why was it that we wanted to add another hotel to downtown in one of the remaining view corridors of the waterway from downtown? Maybe it made sense four years ago, but does it still today, now that we have swanky Hotel Murano instead of dated Sheraton, plus several other hotel projects in the works, including the Winthrop, which definitely wasn’t on the radar back then? Seems to me we’re still following outdated plans, and are about to risk both overdevelopment and loss of treasured public views to make a couple million bucks. Please tell me if I’m missing the benefit to you and me!

The city made a decision some years ago that they wanted to develop and re-habitate the waterfront and millions were spent in the acquistion of the land and the clean up effort.

Right now it is pretty well abandoned. Most of the retail businesses there could not make it. There are a number of cities that have some pretty active waterfronts and hotels are often located there. Vancouver, Seattle and Victoria are some prime examples.

perhaps if enough condos are on the waterfront, there will be a demand for retail (grocergy, restruant, and possibly some drug store)...

though that may require considerable density..

That’s a challenge they are going to have.

The topography of the area makes it difficult to travel from downown to the waterfront. There is a large height difference as well.

If they do not have sufficient density on the waterfront of housing, the area there will not be very self sustaining and every one who lives there is going to have to drive to into Stadium to buy gum.

Thanks for the response, Erik. I haven’t physically been down there recently, so maybe I’ve forgotton how crappy the land is. I just see the view window between Thea’s Landing and Esplanade from higher on the hill and get sad thinking about another big building there to block it. I guess it’s naive to think that a new park there would have the same impact on cleaning and livening up the waterfront there.

Right now there is Thea’s Park at the head of the waterway and there is a park planned for the the southern end of the waterway. As far as I know everything south of the 509 Bridge will be park land. Plus you have the whole Esplanade to play on.
