The News Tribune today is reporting that the private developer behind Point Ruston is offering to build a park and amphitheater on the Metro Parks land along the water. Metro Parks hopes to develop a park in the space some day, but the offer would make the space usable much sooner. Of course, there are trade-offs and the devil is in the details. A public information session is scheduled for Thursday night so we can learn more.

That would be cool so long as they don’t have to have those “don’t eat this dirt kids ‘cause it’s poison” signs all over the place.

The open house was very successful – we had about 50 people attend – more public meetings will be scheduled as this proposal continues to get reviewed.
Now, about those “Don’t Eat” signs – the site would be cleaned and capped according to EPA regulations to ensure that the site can be safely used as a public park. More realistically the signs would say “Don’t dig” since it will be capped with clean soil and we wouldn’t want folks digging down and hitting slag.
What do folks think about a public agency partnering with a private company to provide a public benefit?
