Sounder Adds Wi-Fi to Tacoma Routes (17. August 2007, 08:28 by Derek Young) ~ Not Offered In My Vanagon

This may be great news to many of you in this age of massive I-5 construction. According to Exit133 reader Andrew Becherer, Sound Transit has, with no official announcement or acknowledgment, put free WiFi in some of the Sounder commuter trains that service Tacoma. You’ll need to sit in the first car and… check out Andrew’s post for more details.

Very, very cool. Now add it to the buses and there’s not reason to actually make it to the office so traffic can get as bad as it wants. This could solve the transportation problem completely! Er… something. ;)

I might start commuting to Seattle just so I can use it!

Psssh, We were doing this way before soundtransit jumped on. The Beta that they tried sucked I hope they worked the kinks out now.

I didn’t think to try it this morning, but the fellow sitting behind me was saying that he got a signal on the last two trains in the evening (the 5:10 & 5:40 King Street Departures)

It’s quite possible that this could be a mixup and some of the WiFi equipped cars from Everett Trains got onto the Tacoma Trains when they cobbled together the “extra train” for the I-5 construction.

TANGENT: that being said, there have been 700+ people taking that Puyallup->Seattle train in the morning and just this week along ridership is up ~18% maybe more.

@Michael Pierce

Always so negative! If you clicked through to original post you would see that the TacomaTrainNode is given its due.

Do you know if Casey still rides the Sounder? I keep my eye out for him but I never see him. I do often see Ockahm’s Razor’s rogue of a lead singer. They just happen to have a show at Doyle’s tonight.

It could just be that they are slowly rolling it out to all the trains, and plan to announce it only when the whole process is complete.

Though I did get a wifi signal on the Sounder waay back in October on one of the southbound evening trains to Tacoma.

Regardless, it’s exciting to see public transit embracing technology like this. I hope this continues to be a growing trend.
