The TNT Biz Blog is reporting that the St. Helens LID is a go. After constructions costs rose the City went back to the land owners for a vote. The new vote was even more supportive than the first one. So… the LID will move ahead. Follow the link for more details:

That didn’t matter to property owners, who saw their projected assessments go up by approximately 33 percent. During a revote conducted this month, enough property owners favored the project to allow it to go forward.
Thank god. Stopping halfway after all of the businesses already moved out would have been a disaster.
Kudos to the property owners, more of whom voted for it this time around even with the larger price tag.
I am looking forward to seeing how the area looks in a couple of years. Maybe we should make a photo archive of the area how it looks now for future generations.
This will be a boon to all owners and users of the area – particularly with the Ledger Square Park.
The most startling part of the article for me was the nearly 5 percent increase in the number of parcels in about 3 months. This doesn’t even include the 40-some units in the Roberson. At this rate, the number of parcels would double in less than 4 years.
Needless to say, parcels does not equal people, but it does mean impending growth. It also brings back around the point of how this LID and other tools are necessary to prepare for the growth of Tacoma & downtown.

Jake,
Had a MLK LID meeting Sat morn with property owners from 19th-25th. The response from them is basically where do I sign. This vision is quickly becoming a reality.

As for MLK I think the city has a long way to go with dollar estimates for that area. I know it is hard to give exact numbers but, some would be nice.
Sure it sounds great but, how much is it going to cost and what about the business that are already there? That area is very depressed and it has already seen proerty taxes double. How much does the city think they can pay for?

Good. Hilltop’s time has come to re-build. The market is starting to finally increase enough there so that there may be more private investment and have more of the commercial buildings occupied. The LID could help that along.
Don’t forget to attend the Music and Mural event there:

Estimates for MLK are on the way. Should have them by the end of Sept. Business owners have been contacted but not all have joined in on discussions. Hospitals seem to be on board also. The citys commitment I believe is 40% same as Broadway. The Hilltop is ready! Bring on the trollies!

Is there a link to what the MLK LID would include? With the Broadway LID there was a lot of information provided to help people understand what was being proposed – including maps. Is the MLK process there yet?

Its real close but no link avail yet. Petitions should be coming out in a few weeks. Very exciting for Hilltop.

There appears to be growing support for a Hilltop LID. Here’s an excerpt from Councilmember Julie Anderson’s interview via the award winning reporter from the Index:
I loved the municipal LID as a big-bang tool to jump-start some important projects. I want to see it used on MLK and that upper spine of Tacoma. I want to see it used on Portland Avenue and McKinley.
