General : Like the Exit, but with a Desk
After leaving my corporate digs in Kent earlier this year I’ve been working on various projects, including Exit133. But after months of working out of my living room, the home office, and various coffee shops (thanks, Blackwater!) I started to miss having an office with the right technology, closed door conference rooms, and a predictable environment.
It turns out there are other people who feel the same way. Exit133 is teaming up with Seamus Holman, a local graphic and web designer, and Erik Hanberg of the Horatio and ErikEmery.com to create Suite133, a coworking space for people in Tacoma who need to step out of the coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and living rooms into something a little more social, collaborative, and focused – with a view of the water.
Suite133 will be down on Pacific Ave, right above the new Capers. It’ll be equipped with wireless internet, printer, fax machine, lots of desks and tables for working, a couch and coffee table if you’re taking a break, and two conference rooms.

For the history geeks in the crowd, we’ll be taking the space once home to Liddle & Jones Architects.
We’ll get information up on Exit133 as things progress. Or, if you’re a telecommuter, start-up entrepreneur, creative professional, artist, or you’re simply looking for a place to hold a meeting, contact us for more information. Our doors will be open October 1st.
We’re excited to move the Exit133 Official Corporate Headquarters off the dining room table. We’ll still be frequenting Blackwater. But this way we won’t tie up a table for six hours.

Are you taking over the entire space above Capers or a portion? Not familiar with the layout.

I believe there is a photography studio in the front part of the second floor of the building. Their space is in the back. Yet it won’t matter as the building has a ton of windows.
The third floor remains empty.
“Suite 133” is located right across the street from Artifex (RR Anderson) and adjacent to my office creating a sort of “Blogger’s Triangle.”

Dang! I’m going to quit my job just so I can do my work at Suite133! Now if I only had an idea what kind of work I could do… Anyone need an independent researcher? Indexer?
You go Derek!

If you’re looking at the side of the building, the photo studio is the first three windows on the right. We’re the rest. I think we have something like 90% of the floor by square footage.

RR is across the street?
I’m thinking we need to arrange for some sort of water balloon slingshot battle across Pacific Ave. Artifex wouldn’t mind a water balloon sailing through the window, would they?

There are alot of people we know within a block or two of this area.
Seriously, with so much technology in one spot and the lively street action, someone needs to set up a 24/7 street cam.
RR: can’t you do that from your window with all of the plants in it at Artifex? Its right across from Capers.

Wish you were in West Seattle! We were just talking today about how we might eventually need a space beyond the cluttered utility room, as we get closer to businesshood. Congrats on what sounds like a great vision and continued growth!

Erik:
You need to hire your own circus pony instead of trying to entice the rest of us.

Um … What am I supposed to do with the circus pony?

RR,
I thought you made up the web site in jest.
Yet, here it is the suite133.com web site:
Suite133 is a shared office for telecommuters, start-up entrepreneurs, creative professionals, and anyone craving the creative energy that comes from working alongside other people. Natural light, wood floors, loft-style interior in a historic building. Close to many amenities, including several new restaurants, coffee shops, link light rail and much more.
Wait, there’s more:
Conference Rooms, Comfortable Chairs,Fast WiFi,Human “Coworkers”, Downtown Tacoma!, Secure File Storage, Print, Fax, Electrical,Open Workspace, Restrooms, Coffee/Refrigeration
All for apparently $250 per month.
The web page does not say how many spaces there are open to rent or how many hours one is allowed to be in the shared space. Perhaps there is a standard agreement for the sort of arrangement.
However, if the concept works it could spread to other areas of downtown, there certainly are alot of empty lofts around.

Best of luck in your new space Derek! It was a pleasure representing you. It was more painful than I would have liked, but we’re both better off for it. Right?
If you do refer me to anyone though, please tell them that I usually charge up front…
ps- I look forward to the exit133 Private Reserve.

My quest for global domination will no doubt begin at Suite133. This may be the best development I’ve seen downtown in a long time.

Perhaps we should start marketing the Tech aspect of Tacoma.
If only we could get the city to develop internet infrastructure and go after some Tech firms.

Way to go. Hope the new digs help everyone’s creative endeavors.

Awesome!! My little business is in the crawling stage right now, but when it gets going, I’m going to need somewhere more professional than the office off my bedroom. Unless an unmade bed and socks on the floor are known to boost sales and impress clients.

I hear that Seamus Holman kid is pretty cool…

These offices in the area were nearly all empty a couple of years ago. Now it appears to be the place to be downtown and there are very few office spaces left on this block.
Now the space above Maconi’s has been remodeled and is on the market for lease. Very similar to Suite 133, on the same side of the street and in fact is only about 30 feet away. High ceiling, original floor, brick walls with a view.

Are you the primary name on the lease Derek? How does this work with multiple tenants? Just curious…

Are you the primary name on the lease Derek?
No. There’s a separate company holding the lease that provides office services to its subscribers. Exit133 is therefore a client of Suite133. While there are terms and conditions for use that we have stipulated, there isn’t a sublease or multiple tenants on a master lease.
27 | Posted by Derek | Sep 6, 10:49 AM
That’s good. I would hate to see someone not hold up their end of the lease and you get the short end of the stick. It happens. It’s sounds pretty cool. Who might someone contact if they were interested in this?

This is awesome! Congrats! Awesome to see coworking spread out and providing independents with a great way of connecting and supporting each other!
