We received two phone calls and a cell phone pic about a power pole being installed in the middle of Tollefson Plaza. So, we decided to take a little walk and see what all the fuss was about. What we found…

Why is it here?
When I first asked the question to the yellow vested individual from Tacoma Power, the response was, “It’s very Tacoma. We call it industrial chic.”
“So, why is there a power pole in the Plaza?”
It’s being installed as part of the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, September 26th, at 1:00 pm there will be a pole top rescue competition in Tollefson Plaza. Twelve teams of linemen will begin competition tomorrow at the Tacoma Power facility at 74th and Tyler. The next day, four teams will be in Tollefson Plaza. From what we hear, the competition will be intense and, if you’re in the area, shouldn’t be missed.

Saw the pole go up last week — good stuff! Might have to swing by to see what they’re doing. I’m only glad a big Clear Channel billboard didn’t go up there.

I saw that today and was dumbfounded. There isn’t a wooden pole within a couple hundred yards.
Yet, unfortunately, I though it was a possibility that it was going to be permanent and that the “lines got cross” or that there “wasn’t the budget” for a metal pole.
I guess we can be glad that Tollefson Plaza is being used for something.
