Art On Center now Artists' Owned Collective (26. September 2007, 14:08 by Erik) ~ Collective forming on Fawcett

The Art On Center gallery recently relocated from Center Street to 608 Fawcett, next door to the Grand Cinema. They are changing yet again and now the AOC stands for Artists’ Owned Collective.

From the TacomaArt listserv: Artists will have their work represented by an established Tacoma gallery. The new location offers better visability and your work will be exposed to a large list of new potential clientele. The artists will be juried in by a 6 member board that has been formed to spearhead this gallery.

There seems to be an increase of coop/collective opportunities for artists in Tacoma from creative opportunities to gallery space, like that above. We’ve been following along with the Tacoma Art Place as well as the Broadway Artist Cooperative on Opera Alley.

These are good steps for the arts community here and we hope it helps to strengthen the “Creative Class” of Tacoma.

What is lacking from this blurb is the knowlege that Art on Center recently moved from its Nalley Valley location (on Center Street)to its current location under the a.o.c. name in hopes of increasing traffic and increasing sales.

This move towards a cooperative demonstrates an attempt to keep a good gallery that consistently presented high quality and interesting shows ongoing inspite of the lack of financial support from Tacoma consumers.

Yes, it is great that C.J. and David are adapting to try to keep the gallery going but I would hardly label this move as evidence that Tacoma is supporting the creative community when it is, in fact, evidence of the opposite.

Yes, very encouraging. Tacomans are morphing their workspaces in a manner which will thrive in an urban environment through co-working and cooperatives.

In San Francisco and Seattle, some of the best shops are very small. The more places there are to visit easily by foot, the more desirable the area becomes.
