Tacoma Live Guide (27. September 2007, 10:35 by Erik) ~ A new guide for new Tacomans

A new city guide goes into distribution this Friday. Published by Premier Media Group with help from the City, “Tacoma Live” is aimed at attracting new residents to Tacoma and giving helpful information to those passing through for a night or two.

It’s a limited print run for now, with distribution focused on hotels, relocation packets for the Chamber, and the Tacoma Visitor Center at the downtown Courtyard by Marriott, etc. So let the newcomers get the first copies for now, or read and then replace.

We got to check out the publication earlier this week and were impressed with what we saw. It should be a good resource for someone who’s looking to head out for a night on the town, whether they are trying out Tacoma as a place to live or just here for a convention.

Roxanne Murphy, of Forward Tacoma, leads it off with her own story about her move from Seattle to Tacoma. The magazine also includes helpful (and short) lists, which is handy for a tourist who wants a good recommendation quickly (Top 5 Martini Spots, the Happiest Happy Hour, Tables for Two, etc).

There’s also a lot of neighborhood information, good photographs, and even the ads seem to be pretty useful, especially if you’re planning to move in to town.

The square size will make this city guide stand out and will help showcase a lot of the new dining, nightlife, and entertainment opportunities Tacoma provides.

Great idea but…
Now I don’t know when it went to press but some of the information is very out of date. Simple things that could have been found out on this site and maybe Ed’s Diner at the TNT webpage. For example; Gary’s SteakOut is closed and Bombay Bistro is not in the Goofy Goose Building, its about 1/2 mile West of it. Not to be too picky but the first thing I did was check the publisher’s address because I thought it might be from Seattle.

But hey, all the little mistakes aside, it’s a nice little guidebook for those who either are new to Tacoma or just haven’t ventured out yet.
All in all though, I like it

Hmm was the Blue Olive “Ultra Lounge” on the map?

I have seen some new condo developments still using the Blue Olive on their websites.

“Sure, work is important, but the weekend begins early when the Third Thursday Art Walk beckons. By the time the last gallery closes, you’ll already be thinking about Friday afternoon happy hour at 21 Commerce, a dinner date at elegant El Gaucho and seeing and being seen at Blue Olive Ultra Lounge.”

Hello exit133 readers,

I’m Roxanne Murphy from the City. I provided the concept for the guide, and then Premier Media Group (most certainly from Tacoma!!! :) created it.

Having said that, let me try to answer your questions.

PMG started writing the guide about three months ago, and it went to press a few weeks ago, which is why some of the changes in Tacoma’s restaurant industry are not reflected. And personally, I don’t think this small window makes it very out of date.

Things are always going to be changing in Tacoma’s business world, and PMG did their best to capture a moment in time.

The Blue Olive is not listed in the guide.

An inaugural run of this nature won’t ever be perfect, but I’m just grateful that PMG took a chance in creating it, and I’m so happy that we have it.

Christine, I’m glad you like it overall, and I hope my responses have helped you understand how this came to be.

Thanks!

Roxanne
