Arid Lands ( 3. October 2007, 10:31 by Erik) ~ By Andrew Fry

An Exit133 Top Pick

To those who live in DC, we are the other Washington. To those who live near the Puget Sound, the cities of Hanford, Richland, and Pasco are part of the other, other Washington.

Time to sit down, munch some popcorn and enjoy this beautiful and interesting documentary on how grand-scale government projects helped to create, morph and sustain these Eastern Washington cities. A fascinating view of the juxtaposition of man made destruction and the creation of “pristine” nature through redirection and use of the rivers in an arid desert.

Through interviews with economists, geologists (my favorite), biologists, ecologists, farmologists… I mean farmers, businessman and natives to the region, the story of how a population of less than a thousand boomed to over 50,000 in one year unfolds. It is an amazing story.
