This isn’t just another teen movie. In her cinematic debut, Kim Shaw plays the role of Jenny Chambers, a recent high school grad headed for the Jersey shore for a summer of hard work before she enters Columbia. Hopefully enters Columbia, that is … it seems her financial aid has yet to come through.
Standard road blocks arise – initial job falls through, car dies, unwanted advances from the local spoiled rich kid, mean boss, lives in a dumpy boarding house.
Then there’s the inevitable romance with a brooding foreigner (David Fumero, on loan from One Life to Live) allows Jenny an in with illegal immigrant workers who feign no knowledge of English and shun outsiders. And an underlying subplot involving the villainous local kingpin (Jay O. Saunders) who is also the chairman of the board at the local yacht club. Plus a poker game involving work permits for Alaskan crab fishing, a beat-up houseboat, and one man’s life savings.
Veteran actor Paul Sorvino adds a touch of class as Catch Turner, who provides a father figure for Jenny whilst battling his own demons. As the enigmatic leader of the illegal immigrants, seasoned Norwegian actor Lars Arentz-Hansen shows us exactly why we’re happy he chose acting over a career in law.
