We’ve talked about the Sound Transit plan to cross Pacific Avenue on the south side of downtown. It would connect the Sounder to Lakewood. It would provide a route for Amtrak’s route south. It would increase Tacoma Rail’s ability to move trains. Well, the perceived impact of these changes on our city seems to vary depending on who you ask. In some cases, quite wildly. So, a number of folks are starting to ask for an independent evaluation. “We need a 100 year solution to our transit development not a quick fix for the sake of expediency.”
Take a look at the petition. If you agree, sign it. Maybe you can get your organization to sign it. Then, mail, fax, or scan and email it to the address at the bottom of the page.

Here’s the extensive Exit 133 extensive forum discussion on the Sound Transit Route.
The potential detrimental effects of the proposed Sound Transit route are increasingly being recognized and its getting pretty obvious it is bad for Tacoma and extremely bad for the Dome District. The achitects and Tacoma Planning Commission know its a bad idea.
No one I have heard has tried to depend the proposed route other than to state that its cheap. The Sounder Route is simply indefensible and poses a direct threat to the Dome District with unknown detrimental effects to other areas such as downtown itself.
The Sound Transit proposal is little different than the proposed Freeway and Expressway battles cities have fought
The Freeway Revolts (sometimes expressway revolts) refer to a phenomenon encountered in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, where planned freeway construction in many U.S. cities was halted due to widespread public opposition; especially of those whose neighborhoods would be disrupted or displaced by the proposed freeways.
If anyone has lived in the Puyallup Valley, they could sympathize with what is about to happen to the citizens of South Tacoma and Lakewood. Hopefully someone will wake them up and let them know…..
30+ heavy rail diesel trains traveling at grade on a daily basis through this area day and night. Will anyone ever sleep again in South Tacoma and Lakewood?
With dozens and dozens of at grade whistle blowing, traffic stopping crossings through our fair cities, we can expect to hear a constant train whistle and long lines of car horns as they move slowly north and south.
Hey….The flip side is that property values within a 1/2 mile of each side of the track all the way through Lakewood will definitely change. If the change is for better or worse is yet to be determined.
Sound Transit, Amtrak, City Rail and then BNSF all spewing more diesel fumes into our air. More noise into our homes. I THINK NOT.
Our best hope is to insist that John Ladenburg and Julie Anderson (up for re-election) actually represent our area and our concerns. These two need to protect our community and REALLY look into electric light rail and not settle for anything less for our children, our grandchildren and our great grand children to come.

I thought Tacoma Rail said they couldn’t really use the corridor because of Amtrak and Sounder expansion?

Boe has created some very informative diagrams that show the problems this project will create in the Dome district. Chief among those problems are the at-grade crossings that will be transited by trains moving at low speed. So what about the crossings at Pine, 56th (adjacent to a station) and 72nd? Tacoma is already short of east-west arterials leading from I-5 to University Place. Unlike the crossings in the valley, Tacoma lacks the street footage for people to sit and wait. It’s going to be very, very ugly.
