An Inconvenient Talk (22. October 2007, 14:09 by Whitney) ~ Everyone Likes to Talk

Thursday, Oct. 25, has been designated as Tacoma’s Day of Conversation on Climate Change. The City is hosting “An Inconvenient Talk” by Gary Lagerloef & Johnathan Lilly of the Earth & Space Research Institute a Seattle-based, nonprofit institute that specializes in oceanographic research. It sounds interesting and we look forward to seeing where this conversation goes.

The climate change discussion is especially important for coastal cities like Tacoma and Seattle. Some recent documents depict sea level rise in coming years that could have a disastrous effect on coastal cities, with large land areas devoured by the sea. The downtowns of the Puget Sound region are safe because they are situated on cliffs, but industrial areas like the Tideflats seem most at risk. What would Tacoma do if it lost one of its key economic engines due to global warming? I won’t be able to make it to the discussion but I’m interested to hear what comes out of it.
