We’re a little late with this one, but we still thought you’d want to know … The circa 1928 Wagner Motors building at 616 St. Helens (which houses Mandarin Antiques) sold in early September. We know you wanted it … its huge windows, the elevator that could move a Packard between floors, it’s perfect location in downtown Tacoma.

It was listed in June of 2006 for $2.9 million and sold in September for $2.4 million. So while the price has gone down, a $1.6 million return in six years isn’t too shabby.
The new owners are listed as Shaub St Helens LLC & Roann LLC et al. No word on the intended use of the building. The building is on the Tacoma Historic registry, however, so we’re looking forward to an adaptive reuse of the big beautiful windows… and the elevator.

I disagree, drizell. Historic designation should come before high density. We could start worrying about the effects of historic buildings when every parcel of land is built on, but historic buildings help keep neighborhoods interesting and make it more likely that it will attract high density.
Case in point, the Wagner Motors building is in a neighborhood that has seen a huge surge in density, and I have to assume that part of the attraction is buildings like this one, the Walker, and the Merlino Art Center (a building that is still, unfortunately, not on the historic preservation list.

Beautiful building.
Make sure and check out the Chinese antiques before they get moved out. The store has an incredible collection of huge artifacts like metal horses, 10 foot urns all set out in a labyrinth. One of a kind in Tacoma. Nothing even close like it.
Mandarin Antiques is a true Tacoma Treasure. I hope they find a suitable location and continue on in Tacoma.
