City Council Meeting- Oct. 30, 2007 (30. October 2007, 21:01 by Whitney) ~ It Was Epic!

Tonight’s City Council meeting was one for the record books – or at least our record book. After nearly three and a half hours the Council had accomplished many things. We’ll just give you the highlights:

  • The public hearing on the proposed changes to the zoning on the Thea Foss Waterway was well attended. Many citizens commented, most in favor. If you wish to comment on the issue and could not make it this evening the Council invites your written comments and there will be a public comment period on November 13, when it is formally on the agenda.
  • Resolution 37314, the $1.65 million development agreement with the Gintz Group to save the Luzon Building, has been held over until November 13.
  • The Council authorized an agreement with Winthrop Hotel, L.L.C., to purchase a piece of property from the city at S. 35th and Pacific Ave for the construction of a mixed-income development. The intention is to create a housing development with affordable units to house some of the current Winthrop residents, as well as others, but the site hasn’t been studied for environmental issues. The site had been used as a landfill and the development hasn’t been fully fleshed-out as a result.
  • Resolution 37317 passed, granting several properties tax exemptions under the multi-family exemption program. The large development planned on East 25th and four projects in the Tacoma Mall area are now benefactors.

We hope the Council is as tired as we are. What a day… more to come.

Clarification: Mr. Mayor said that the council welcomed any additional comments written or by e-mail. I believe he meant that the Council would be interested in hearing more from interested parties in a legislative manner. I think the public hearing and public record were closed at the conclusion of the hearing.

Prior to taking public comment, staff always states that no public comment will be taken on any issue that has already had a public hearing. I assumed that this applied to the Foss project as well, but I could well be mistaken.

Regardless, after three years and exhaustive staff work, is there really anything left to add at this point?
