Five ships need youth crews to get from Victoria BC to Tacoma during next year’s Tall Ships festival.
50 Tacoma students between the ages of 14 and 17 are sought to the make the trip. There’s orientation in May led by the Tacoma Sea Scouts, and then you get whisked up to Victoria on June 29 and then tack and jibe your way south to Tacoma, coming into port on the 2nd of July. Students would then live on board during the festival and participate in the crew activities until July 8.
The cost is $750 and scholarships are available.
The Youth on Board program is sponsored by Tacoma Tall Ships, MetroParks, and the Tacoma Sea Scouts.
Student applications are online at Tacoma Tall Ships and are due December 1.
As it happens, they are also looking for 10 adult chaperones, so the chance to do a little sailing on a classic tall ship can be yours as well.

In college I was lucky enough get to spend 6 weeks sailing on a 125’ schooner. It was some of the most memorable 6 weeks of my life. I can’t recommend experiences like this enough.

I got involved in something like this when I was a kid. Actually my parents told me they were enrolling me in kindergarten. Turned out I ended up working in the bilge of a Liberian freighter, not good memories I’ll have you know.
